It's a lovely start from Yasir. He's gotten into his groove straight away. Within the stumps, that's how he got his results in the first innings - four leg-before decisions.

There's a bit old footmark outside Root's off stump for Yasir to land the ball in. Rahat Ali, the man who has been making that hole, was warned in the previous over. Yasir is already finding the rough, all to the chirps and handclaps of his team-mates. Careful, Joe Root. Don't got back. Exploratory maiden from Yasir.

England were being positive in the first innings by knocking Yasir around for three or four an over. There's no sense in being hoohah about it. Being positive for me is just knocking it about, milking the singles. When Joe Root played the rash shot, that was the open door and they rushed through it.

Brace, brace. Yasir Shah into the attack. Breath held across England.

Hard hands from Vince. A one-handed try from Younus Khan. It would have been an excellent catch.

This would have been a worldie, one of the best you could see. James Vince gets a life after edging to second slip, but that's only half the story. Younus Khan dives full length, just getting a grab at the ball before it hurts the turf. It pops up, so he tries again, desperation etched on his face. Hand to it, but not clinging on. His movement across the turf as he lay prone was almost like a man doing the worm.

Yasir doesn't like bowling with the new ball. I think Pakistan will bring him on in the next three or four overs.

  8. Eng 42-2 (target 283)published at 12:11

How long before we see Yasir Shah? England have scored well against the seamers, albeit losing two wickets to a combination of a good ball and a poor shot. I suspect Pakistan would have chewed your arm off if you offered them two wickets before Yasir even removed his sweater. Some awful, rascal blazers in the crowd. Blue and red, red and orange. Where do you even get those from? Hogwarts?

The tall Vince, stubbled, open stance to allow the ball across him, leans out to play another lovely cover drive. We've been here before with Vince - a nice start, then sawn off. He's at the crease because England have already lost both openers to Rahat Ali.

Bob Hawkins: Ladies & gentlemen...it is now officially squeaky bum time.

Jon Dunn: Vince and Ballance, your time is now!

Stewart Mills: Surely it won't be 30-odd for three, that never happens with England.

Amir scurries in to Root, who gurns and opens his eyes wide in a bid to keep himself alive. Decent pace from Amir, stinging the hands of wicketkeeper Sarfraz. Tense hum inside HQ, crowd aware of the importance of this passage. An hour done in the fourth day, this game bumping along.

Jonny Kirby: England won't get past 150! Mark my words.

I can't believe how far he went to get that. The right foot should have gone across if he wanted to get that.

  15. Eng 36-2 (target 283)published at 11:58

Outstanding celebration from a young Pakistan fan in the crowd. He even threw his cap to ground in delight. Hafeez, seeing the little fella on the big screen, applauds with a big grin on his face. Replays don't do Hales any favours, the ball was probably too full to cut. James Vince, under pressure, is away with a drive for four. Misbah mutters something under his breath. All happening.

That was a poor shot. It was bouncing wide and he goes to cut it. He wasn't in any position. Hafeez caught it nicely, but that was a poor shot again. I don't care if his mum or dad's listening, that was not a good shot.

Good catch, woeful shot, England in bother. Rahat Ali hangs the ball outside the off stump of Alex Hales, who can't resist a flat-footed waft. It goes quickly to first slip, where Mohammad Hafeez moves a little to his left to take a very sharp grab. Pakistan big favourites now, England's shaky middle order must stand up.

There's a lot of Pakistani support in the ground and it's another full house. The health of Test cricket at Lord's is flying.

Amir back over the wicket, skating in and getting one two angle past a defensive prod. When Amir stays on to the pads, Hales continually picks on the fielder at mid-wicket, who may need to ice his hands if this continues. On the England balcony, Trevor Bayliss sits under his floppy sunhat, look of bemusement etched on his face.

These five-and-a-half overs, what it tells us is that if England can play the spinners better, there's nothing to fear the seamers. It's really about how you play the leg-spinner. Do you play with care and attention, or do you attack him?
