I've watched Woakes bowling. If I stood at first slip like Alastair Cook I'd be a bit concerned. Woakes hasn't moved the ball out at all. I've seen one ball swing or seam an inch out. That's your wicket-taking ball.

It's all set up for Moeen Ali to bowl one over before lunch, isn't it? Moeen is currently off the field, stroking his beard, so he's not exactly in the right place to be bowling. Aslam, who has to be utterly convinced to use his bat, forces Finn round the wicket. In a rare misjudgment, Aslam gets an edge, but it's straight to ground. England need a rocket.

It's all a bit flat in Brumingham at the moment, which is credit to the work done by this Pakistan pair. They have blunted an England attack that may have felt set for some feasting when Hafeez went in the first over. Woakes under a pretty gloomy sky, watched by Santa and some ladies dressed in Baywatch T-shirts. Single to Aslam, couple to Azhar. Haven't seen a great deal of creative thinking from the hosts this morning.

Pakistan have grafted. Finn's been short, maybe he's trying for pace. But pace is only good if you bowl in the right areas.

Sami Aslam's patient knock is made all the more remarkable by the fact he hasn't played a first-class match of any sort since December. He tucks a single off his hips, allowing Azhar the opportunity to tuck into a Finn long lop - cut for four. Time for some spin?

There's an incredibly pasty man in the crowd dressed as He Man, complete with red wig. Lots of flesh on show, reminding me that I've got chicken for tea. Lovely shot from Azhar, climbing in to a rare loose ball from Woakes, screaming a drive through the covers for four. England need some inspiration here.

The foundation and platform has been laid by Pakistan. They've played the old-school way and have set out their stall.

Inzamam-ul-Haq is in the house, looking every inch the statesman. Excellent lunches at Edgbaston, so probably no coincidence that Inzy is in the house. Moeen Ali goes through some looseners at mid-on. At this rate we'll be seeing him before lunch. Finn to Aslam, who seems to think that hitting the ball is the exception, not the rule. More leaves than an autumnal morning.

My brother had a cricket themed wedding in Trinidad and gave all the guests miniature bats signed by Kieron Pollard!

Jonathan, you're taking us down a whole different alley there - times when you saw a cricketer at a wedding. Ooofff, Aslam cops one on the bonce here, ducking into a Woakes bumper that really doesn't bounce. They run a single, with Aslam left to adjust his helmet at the non-striker's end. Like Finn, though, Woakes isn't making Azhar play.

Jonathan Lee: We had a life-size cut-out of Straussy at our wedding. One of the guests nicked him. Been on tour since 2012.

Finn, all long legs and bouncy dark mop, charges in, but is still bowling at least a yard too short. Azhar barely needs his bat in this set, leaving with his back foot raised, flamingo-style. On the subject of going to the bar before 12, I know someone on a stag do at Edgbaston today. I'm hearing reports that he's already got through three pints. Long day.

In two or three overs, with the left-hander in, it might be worth getting Moeen Ali on. With a few footholes around he might get an edge.

The noise has gone up a level, possibly aided by the ancient cricketing law of 'thou shalt not go to the bar before the clock strikes 12'. Woakes to Aslam, who is constantly looking to drop the ball on the off side and set off. Azhar, like a parent, is having to keep him in check. Zippy from Woakes, but the ball has done little in the air all morning.

Sam Roberts: Was at a wedding in July, that had a groom's XI vs bride's XI on the Sunday. Groom took it very seriously and was soon told off.

Max Ashmore: Our captain got married in the morning then hit a 50 to win the game off the last over in the afternoon!

Sami Aslam has left the ball well. When he has played, he's done so late and with the ball under his eyes. Proper Test batting. There's gloom after drinks, Finn charging in and nipping one past the edge of a leaping Azhar. The lanky Middlesex man could just do with getting the ball a yard fuller in length.

I don't think England have got the ball in the right areas consistently. The ball is swinging so sometimes it can be hard to control. If you can build two or three overs of good stuff, there could be a mistake from these Pakistan players.

That is one of my all-time favourite pictures sent in to the live text. If I'm being critical, I'd say there's a touch too much bottom hand. The bloke on the right, whose sleeve we can see, might be in danger.
