It's not been bad from England. It's not been brilliant; they could bowl a bit better. I don't think Broad's been at his best. I don't think he's made the batsmen play at it.
Pak 35-1
A double change from England (captaincy by numbers?) as Chris Woakes comes into the attack on his home ground. Pace at 87mph, the quickest England bowler on show today, watched on by a chap in the crowd dressed as a bishop. Lovely line, forcing a play-and-miss from Sami Aslam. Time for a drink.

There's good pace from Steven Finn, a bit of away shape. He certainly seems to be getting it through with a bit more zip.
Indeed there is a change, the roar telling us that Steven Finn, who bowled so well here last year, is into the attack. A short ball first up is greeted with more applause, Finn getting more good carry at speeds in the mid-80s. A touch too wide, Azhar Ali not being forced into playing, but Finn looking in reasonable rhythm.

Dougie. I'm sure there are codes to keep you updated. However when you hear the words "I now declare", this has nothing to with events at Edgbaston!
Rob, Notts
In two weeks I am an usher at a wedding which involves a full on twenty20. The groom is opening the bowling the and bride opening the batting. What could possibly go wrong?

After that discussion with umpire Wilson about his follow-through, Anderson threw quite a strop at the end of the over, snatching his cap and gesticulating at the pitch. Always get the umpire on your side, Jimmy. Broad, who has perhaps been too straight to Aslam, goes over the wicket and posts a short cover. There's a filthy cloud away to the right. Another maiden. Fancy a change, skipper?

I'd be tempted to keep going with Anderson. He's a seven or eight-over-spell type bowler. I'd keep Stuart Broad and Steven Finn as impact bowlers. I'd bring Woakes on for Broad, and then Finn can be your firepower.
I also knew one bloke who got married on a Saturday morning so he could play cricket in the afternoon. Another got married on the Saturday then went on a cricket tour on the Sunday. Neither marriage lasted. Still Anderson, England still searching, Aslam busy in taking another single on the off side. Umpire Joel Wilson has a word with Anderson about his follow-through. Not quite happening for England.

JonesyJones: Just postpone the wedding Dougie. You can do that any day when there's not a Test on. Your bride to be will be fine with it.
Gooseman: Dougie, get the organist to make umpire gestures or hit pre-agreed wrong notes for runs and wickets.

This has actually been some pretty decent batting from the Pakistan second-wicket pair. When the wicket fell in the first over, you got the feeling that carnage might follow. However, they have been calm and solid in defence. England have bowled well, but not found the bit of magic. Another maiden from Broad, some encouragement from behind the stumps, but no rewards.

England yesterday started securely with the bat and you felt that it could be a horrible day for Pakistan. But as soon as a wicket fell, it was very difficult for a new man coming in. You feel that it will be the same today. Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad are making the ball talk.

Dougie, I went to a cricket-themed wedding last year. It was brilliant. The invitations were in the form of tickets, tables were named after grounds and had Wisdens on them, they had even prepared a pitch on the grass outside. I suggested a similar thing to my girlfriend. It was met with 'the face'. Anderson comes round the wicket to Aslam, who is showing great certainty outside off stump. What to play, what to leave. Possibly time for a change.

I'm getting married tomorrow. Is there a code for receiving cricket updates so as not to arouse the wife-to-be's suspicion?
Dougie Bentley
There's another hold up at the beginning of Broad's new over. From what I can tell, there's an open window above the sightscreen, behind which sits someone on a leather settee. How that is distracting, I don't know. It also leads me to wonder of other times that cricket has been unwittingly disrupted. Cloud, sun, then cloud as Broad gallops in, Azhar clipping a couple off his toes.

That first over was a beauty from Jimmy Anderson. It was a very nine, 10, 11 dismissal.
Aslam 10, Azhar 10
After the initial excitement of the Anderson wicket (watch it again here), the noise has been turned down in Brum. This Pakistan pair are taking the sting out of the new ball pair as the sun plays hide and seek behind a cloud. Azhar, defending with a curtain-rail bat, gets a thick edge past the four slips for a boundary.

Nick Hancock and Frank Skinner and in the crowd. It's like They Think It's All Over meets Fantasy Football League. A 90s comedy show set at the Test match. Aslam, the leftie, shuffles across his crease in preparation to face Broad, exposing leg stump. Broad, in his best over so far, is on and around off stump. A maiden.

Charlie Fellows: On the subject of curtains, I don't even have any, and I have four windows in my bedroom! Could be curtains for Pakistan.
