    Azhar 86, Younus 0

Nothing you can do after such a dismissal but look to the heavens in despair. Aslam was out by about four feet I think. Vince had plenty of time to set his throw up and whack the top of the stumps. New man Younus Khan is given a testing time first up by Woakes, who beats him twice outside the off stump.

Well batted, young man - he's got Pakistan in a good position. But he got totally stuffed by his mate there. There was still a little work to be done by Vince, but he had all the time in the world to line it up and Aslam was still three or four paces out. Silly things like that can change the momentum.

Aslam run out (Vince) 82 (Pak 181-2)

Breakthrough! Vince with a superb direct hit to run out Aslam, who was the unfortunate victim of a single that never should have been attempted. Azhar blocks the ball to cover point off Woakes and sets off. Aslam obliged from the other end, but was woefully short.

Pakistan are certainly making England look a bit ordinary. Aslam, with eyes as sharp as panther's, watches the ball all the way to the long on boundary after charging down and slogging Moeen Ali for six. Not much effort required for that shot, just got to the pitch of the ball and lifted it easily.

Ben Ellis: Slow pitch plus + no Stokes = Ordinary!

Paul Roberts: So the difference between a victorious England team & one that stutters to defeat rests primarily on the fitness of Ben Stokes?

Runs slowly starting to flow. Aslam flicks one off his pads to fine leg in this Woakes over. Cheers and chants starting to flow in the crowd. "Barmy Army" definitely on, though England not looking like they've got much to cheer about.

The session before tea was the first of the series to pass without a wicket.

Pakistan - nothing if not mavericks, or so Geoffrey would say. I was commenting earlier about how they've treated Moeen with polite defence this session, and then out of his crease comes Azhar and smokes a huge six over long-on. There's an attempt at a one-handed catch in the crowd as well, although not sure if it was cleanly taken.

How things change, eh? Everyone was thinking Yasir would run through England after his Lord's heroics as well. Funny old game, this cricket. Aslam gets two off the final ball of Woakes' over.

Have to say ALL the commentators and summarisers were a touch dismissive of the Pakistanis before the day's play started and a little arrogant about how England would run through our guests today. Well done Pakistan.

Mmmmm... cake. Haven't had one today. Which is probably a good thing all things considered.

More defence from Pakistan to Moeen. Makes a difference from when the likes of Misbah face him, when most shots seem filled with the intent to slog. A maiden.

    Azhar 78, Aslam 69

Azhar's wagon wheel has covered pretty much all areas of the ground. Just a few more strokes down the cover area will make it visually very satisfying, especially if you've got a bit of that obsessive compulsive thing. Speaking of strokeplay, he superbly drives Woakes' full and wide delivery for four through point. And as he got down low, there's a pose to match.

Moeen has been trying to knock on the Pakistan doors on the pitch at any rate. He goes round the wicket to the left-handed Sami Aslam, who offers polite defence in return. One attempt at a cut off the back foot is saved at point. In the spirit of our cricketing weddings theme, these two batsmen are getting on just fine - no trouble in paradise just yet.

England don't have a spin bowling coach. If I was Moeen I'd go next door and talk to Pakistan's Mushtaq Ahmed.

Plenty of time left in the day for England to change the complexion of this match a bit. Moeen Ali with the first over after tea. Azhar Ali to face...

Thanks Justin. Not so sure about me being a lucky charm for anyone. I decided to have an extra 11-minute lie-in for the first time in a week, only to then get stuck in some amazing congestion on the commute into work. Much like me at 10am today, England look a bit stuck in first gear.

That's it, that's the end of my driving metaphors. Probably.

Having failed to take a wicket in 27 overs, I've been withdrawn from the attack. Hopefully Bibhash Dash will have better luck as he talks you through the final session.
