You've got to put this down to good batting. Also, the pitch has seasoned out - it has become a good battng track. England will be ruing the fact that they didn't get enough in the first innings. They could have got 350.

Aslam is just not interested when the ball is outside off stump. I love aggression, but it's good to see an old-fashioned opening batsman playing within his limitations. Anything outside his left eye he's not playing.

The first 50 of this partnership took 121 balls, the second 120 and the third 82. Pakistan are speeding up.

Azhar Ali, meanwhile, was dropped twice - on 38 by Joe Root and on 69 by Moeen Ali - as he reached 72 by tea. The partnership is currently worth a not inconsiderable 154.

Sami Aslam, an opener who has been moulded around the old-fashioned virtues of patience and knowing when to play outside off stump, has nudged his way to 69, his maiden Test half-century.

If there was any doubt over where the balance of power lay after the opening day, there can be none over who has enjoyed the better of the second day. Two sessions have brought England a solitary wicket and Pakistan are within 143 of England's first-innings 297.

This is only the second time that Pakistan have added 150 for the second wicket in a Test match in England.

Can England winkle one out before tea? No, is the short answer. Azhar squirts Woakes into the leg side to take Pakistan to 150, before Aslam collects the 27th single of his increasingly impressive innings. Bairstow lets the last ball of the session through his legs for two byes to rather sum up England's slipshod afternoon.

England must not panic. They have to keep trying to take wickets. The ball is swinging, so keep encouraging the drive. It's very easy to think 'we should have four or five wickets now', but Pakistan are still a long way behind.

    Aslam 68, Azhar 70

Oooof! Moeen skids one on to Aslam, who, cramped for room, bottom edges a half-hearted cut past his stumps and collects four. It's not going England's way.

Chris Woakes, replacing Steven Finn, finds enough swing after the ball has passed Sami Aslam's leave to pin Jonny Bairstow on the finger. Painful. Maiden over.

It was very catchable, but it just hit his fingers. It was hit firmly - they either stick or they don't. You can't blame Mo for dropping it, but it was a definite chance.

    Pak 144-1

There it is! The chance that England have been waiting for! But it's down. Again. Azhar advances to Moeen, gives it plenty as he drives, and Moeen shells a sharp chance just to the left of his face. That went quickly. But again, not the world's most difficult catch. That's two drops this afternoon.

John Michael Poole: Think we're in a spot of bother here. Those lambasting the decision to bowl first yesterday are looking foolish.

    Finn 12-3-33-0

Two slips and man on the drive to England's quickest bowler, Finn. This is the sort of field you'd expect on a dustbowl in the UAE, not a seamer-friendly Edgbaston surface. I say seamer-friendly - it's hardly been hooping and jagging around, but there has been enough there to keep the bowlers interested. Finn nips one back to hit Aslam - beaten for pace too - on the pad, but it's too high.

The field that Moeen has at the moment allows him to be milked. He needs a field that will create pressure. His field isn't helping him.

    50 overs

Aslam is taking a liking to Moeen here, down on one knee to sweep for another boundary. He follows it up with a muscular drive over mid-on for four more, then a cover-driven two. The Pakistanis clearly don't rate England's first-choice spinner. And Misbah hasn't even reached the crease yet.
