That is the critical part of Pakistan's performance. A good partnership and an excellent innings. Azhar has put things right on a personal level with this innings.
Pak 104-1 (41 overs)
Steven Finn into the attack - and that's Azhar's half-century, courtesy of the nicest stroke we've seen this afternoon, a back-foot drive that brings him three runs. A 21st Test fifty for Azhar - followed by five runs to Aslam as James Vince's throw from fine-leg hits the stumps and skids away to the boundary for four overthrows. England's frustration level just lifted a notch.

Sam James: Jimmy looks displeased today, even by his standards. Careful, sunshine; let's set the example with "chit-chat" to the umpire.

Anderson into his seventh over of this spell after lunch - he's got nothing to show for his effort, other than a telling-off from the match referee to look forward to. Azhar controls an edge to third man for a couple, then works off his pads for a single to move on to 49.

Broad goes wide on the crease from over the wicket, bowling it wide and full in an attempt to draw Sami Aslam out of his comfort zone. The left-hander drives uppishly to deep point for a single. For all this pair's obduracy, there's enough hope for England. The partnership is now worth 92.

It probably hit Azhar Ali's bat. I think that's the reason why it was not given. It was a very good ball, a sharp in-dipper.

Anderson and England go up for an lbw appeal against Azhar Ali. Too high - and a bit leg side. Umpire Oxenford shakes his head. Anderson, like a stroppy teenager, snatches his cap and sweater from Oxenford's at the end of the over. Not a happy bunny. Poor form from England's most experienced bowler.

This is an excellent partnership. They are making sure that they go hard at England. Any amount of lead will put England under pressure. And it's been a very powerful performance from Sami Aslam.
And we have our first boundary after lunch, Azhar drilling a wide half-volley from Broad through cover for four. Broad's response? A beauty of a leg-cutter that is far too good for Azhar to lay bat on.

Sami does some blocking, Sami does some leaving. Anderson finds a hint of lift off the final ball of the over but it's not quite straight enough to worry the opener. A maiden, Anderson's fourth in 11 overs.

There's a good bit of old-fashioned Test cricket going on at the moment.
Broad 10-3-18-1
Aslam steers Broad to third man to collect a single and move to 33, the sort of stroke of which he was in control but which nonetheless gives the bowler some sort of hope/moral victory. Aslam has scored more than half his runs behind square on the off side.

This has been much better from England after lunch, Anderson once again setting the example with a full, probing line. He beats Azhar with one that leaves him off the pitch. No doubt Jimmy will be thinking Azhar shouldn't even be there...

The pitch hasn't got as much fizz as the Pakistan bowlers had yesterday.
Pak 80-1
Broad finds Azhar Ali's outside edge as he draws him into a tentative push. But the ball lands a foot or so short of Alastair Cook at first slip. Ooohs and aaahs all round.

Both sides are just sitting in after lunch, not wanting to make a mistake, not wanting to open the door. If England can get a wicket, it could be a case of one brings four.
