I haven't forgotten about the Alex Hales story I mentioned. I'll get round to it if and when England stop losing wickets. Air heavy with tension at the moment, England trying to hold back the Pakistan charge. Root, the main man when it comes to a target being set, pushes Sohail off the back foot, then plays a flowing cover drive. Two boundaries. The England supporters given the opportunity to hit back with noise of their own.

England just in a bit of a pickle. They were looking so comfortable, but then a couple of good deliveries and a couple of good catches...

    Amir 14-4-32-1

Like Cook before him, Hales stormed off. Both openers blasted the ground with their bats as they departed. There was really no need for Hales to play at that, a nothing stroke, one too risky for the potential rewards. James Vince, what have you got? The Pakistan fans in the ground are bouncing, roaring Amir in. It's another wonderful passage in this brilliant Test.

A great delivery by Amir. Hales had to play at that. He's been so patient, he had a little poke at that one. It just moved away from him, and it was beautifully caught. England just in a little bit of trouble.

Hook, line and sinker. Alex Hales falls into Mohammad Amir's trap and Pakistan are on the charge. Outside off stump, outside off stump, outside off stump. Eventually, Hales can resist no longer. Prod at the ball, bat away from the body, edge to second slip. Suddenly, England are in bother.

Thomas Blake: Cook in such good touch lately that 66 feels like a failure.

Sean Wilson: Pakistan have caught brilliantly so far. It's what's keeping them in this Test match.

    Sohail 10-1-42-1

Pakistan get the rewards for finally getting it in the right area to Cook. Too often last night they were too short or too leggy. This was full and wide of off stump, drawing Cook into a shot he's not always too comfortable playing. A top catch by Yasir, who had to cover a lot of ground. Joe Rooooooot is the new man, surviving a strong caught behind appeal as Sohail gets on to climb.

Cook will be disappointed with that. It was a nothing delivery. It just sort of spooned up to square cover where the athletic Yasir Shah dived full length. It's just what Pakistan needed. They were a bit deflated yesterday at the end but they've got themselves slightly back in here.

    Cook c Yasir b Sohail 66 (Eng 126-1)

Whadda catch! Huge moment! Yasir Shah takes an absolute ripper to dismiss Alastair Cook. It's not a great shot from the skipper, reaching out to push at wide ball from Sohail Khan. The balls goes aerially to point, where the elastic Yasir dives to his left to grab the ball just above the turf. A big blow for Pakistan to strike first thing.

I saw Amir take two wickets against Somerset, with some big hooping swing. And I thought 'he's back', but it's not happened has it?

Hales, ever-present bandage on his left arm, waits for Amir, patiently leaving the ball when the left-armer hangs it outside the off stump. The England opener's generosity last night isn't the first time I've heard him being quite a good lad. I've got a story for you...

    Cook 66, Hales 54

Sohail Khan, looking about as mobile as a chest of drawers, shares morning duties, round the wicket and angling into the pads to allow Cook a clip for a couple. On the subject of Alex Hales refunding £4.10 for slow over rate yesterday, if everyone in the crowd asked for a refund, England's bill would have been around £80,000.

I've seen the pitch this morning and it looks an absolute belter. There's not a scratch on it.

Blue sky and white clouds, Amir skidding in with two slips in place. Hales, right arm covered in ink, pounces on the first opportunity to score by cutting a short ball through point for four. The ground might be barely half full, but there's a big roar. Pakistan start where they left off - too short.

Here come the players, skipping down the steps into the sunshine. As has been the pattern in this match so far, a lot of the stands are empty early doors. Are you trying to get to the ground? Stuck at New Street?

England's Jonny Bairstow on TMS: "It's a game that's in the balance. It's an exciting day to come and play cricket - it can go any of three ways.

"Any first hour is key. It's a good pitch. But, whether the sun is shining or not, it's important the boys start again.

"It's an important day's cricket and it's going to be an exciting couple of days. I'm sure it's going to be as raucous as ever."
