Joe Root greets Yasir Shah's leg-spin after lunch with a superbly controlled sweep for four in front of square, followed by a scampered two off his legs. A change in approach, perhaps?

    Pakistan are playing the right card here. It's still a good pitch. There's not a great deal of swing. The ball is bouncing. In the last hour yesterday I think Pakistan attacked a bit too much and allowed England to get a lead.

    Has the change in toss rules in county cricket helped spinners?

    Everyone's got to be able to bat. In order to bowl spin, you've got to dedicate a good part of your life to bowling it. The spinner is probably the last of the specialist positions left in cricket.

    Jacques Kallis used to bat with this simple look on his face. And I'd think he was either simple or he was a genius. Once I got him out round the wicket caught at slip at Durban, and I've never been more surprised at a wicket in my life.

    I don't think I've been taken for more than 15 or 16 in an over.

    A good thing I did was hold the rough side into my hand. I'd rub my hand in the dirt and made sure there was traction. I made sure there was dust on the ball - legally - and it helped it stay dry. And it gave it good rip and fizz, and a lot of rotation. It would come back in to the batsman.

    Advice on bowling leg-breaks? 

    Leg spin is the hardest to bowl. Shane Warne is the greatest bowler to have played. He held the ball very, very lightly in his hand. He'd walk up almost like he'd drop it. At the very last minute he exerts pressure.

    I feel bitter when I see a doosra bowled, because I couldn't do it. These bowlers end up bowling wonder deliveries!

    Does Cook understand the art of spin bowling?

    There are two types of captains: one who understands spin and another who doesn't understand it but who trusts the bowlers. At the moment, it's more of a set field by bowlers as Cook doesn't understand spin bowling. Cookie sets a field where it's "if you bowl a bad ball it will help me stop three runs". Cookie never really got spin that much. Andrew Strauss never really got spin but he let me have my way.

    Given a thrashing at table footy by Garry Sobers in 1968. He was playing for Notts v Hants in Portsmouth and being entertained at my club, Waterlooville CC. I was in the Colts team.
