I've lost count of the number of maidens since I took over this live text. Although this is by no means a dull phase of play. Plenty happening out there to keep us all interested, certainly keeping the trumpeters happy. Anderson probes away against Misbah, who offers a solid bat in return.
Sami 51, Misbah 6
Moeen is close to making the batsmen feel claustrophobic with his close-in fielders. Three around Aslam's off stump - two slips and a silly point - and a leg gully. Aslam still tries to whack the spinner, sending silly point into a flurry of protective motions, but can only mis-hit it. A maiden after all of that.

It was the ball flicking the thigh on the way through. England knew this.
Target 343
Peter, I assume it was a case of "some for me", "some for the target" in this ancient Greece cricket iteration?
Most of Edgbaston goes "oooooooh!" as Anderson gets a slightly inswinging delivery to go between Misbah's bat and pad. Cries of Howzzat from the players in general, but umpire was absolutely, positively, spot-on with the not-out call. Replays show ball brushed the thigh pad. Misbah then sneaks a four past gully.

Peter Collins: In Ancient Greece they used to play 'kottabos', which involved flinging dregs of wine at targets. The first bowlers?
Pak 98-3
The calm of Aslam is abandoned for a brief moment, but it is to good effect. Aslam steps forward on his knee and whacks Moeen over mid-wicket for four. An aerial shot, and more at place in T20 than a Test, but as I said, effective. Brings him his second half-century of the game.
Anderson 7-2-22-1
Another great over for England, and once again I must compliment Bairstow on the catch. As Ramiz suggests he was a bit closer than normal, and had to move quickly to his right. He finishes off with a drop and roll for effect. There's a special drill for that at wicketkeeping school, or there should be anyway.

There was a bit of reverse swing from Jimmy Anderson - Younus Khan was drawn into playing at it.
Ramiz Raja
Former Pakistan captain on BBC Test Match Special
Very good delivery and an out-of-touch Younus Khan couldn't do anything. Beautifully held by the keeper - they're standing closer and it flew to him.
Younus c Bairstow b Anderson 4 (Pak 92-3)
Brilliant from Anderson, who gets the ball moving ever so subtly away. Younus falls for it hook, line, and sinker. He plays forward, almost a bit gingerly, and it takes the outside edge. Very well caught by Bairstow moving to his right. Anderson yells out in celebration, chest puffing, collectively pulling England's tail up.

Dr Kimberley Horton: They wouldn't have had hawk eye, they would've had the eye of Horus.
Moeen 10-2-19-1
Another maiden. Moeen brings in a silly point to Younus along with the short leg and two slips. Bit more drift attempted by England’s spinner but Younus is not giving in to any temptation.

Target 343
Apparently Joe Root is the designated "suicide gully" fielder, the one that stands closer in than normal, so much so it requires a helmet. Crowd again in good voice and Anderson gets clapped on in his run-up, Root joins in with the clapping. It's a maiden in the end.
So, any thoughts on the ancient games? We are after all in Olympic season, ancient greek traditions and all that. Thought of an ancient Egyptian form of cricket? Perhaps also one that Pythagoras indulged in, probably with a very good handle of Duckworth-Lewis? Tweet, text and email in the usual ways if you're feeling creative.

Target 343
Mooen keeps the two slips that brought him a wicket previously. He's got a short leg to Younus as well. Chants of "Moeen... Moeen, Moeen" to the tune of that "Yaya... Yaya, Yaya" one from the kickball float in from the crowd. Younus and Aslam get a single each.

Dave Graham: And some people want four-day Test matches? They must be crazy!!
Aslam 45, Younus 3
Change of bowling as Anderson replaces Broad. He gets some shape away from the left-handed Aslam. The batsman was guilty of trying to fetch outside off and the ball was millimeters away from his edge. Anderson, who's got some black and red bands on his right wrist, sends a shorter rising one in the final ball but Aslam manages to guide it away to third man for four. Good battle this.
