Kevin Ticehurst: Well played Moeen Ali. When we were on the rocks, him and Bairstow have saved this innings!

Paul Baldwin: Way to go Mo #BeardToBeFeared

Dave Wood: Absolute class from Moeen. Masterclass in batting with the tail. Take a bow.

The leg-spin experiment is ended - Mohammad Amir is going to charge in to bowl from the Vauxhall End, but James Anderson, who has a Test-best score of 81 let's not forget, helps himself to four through third man. Amir retaliates by firing in a fierce lifter, which is called wide and signalled as his one bouncer for the over.

There's a devil's advocate suggestion that England should declare now, and try to nip one or two Pakistan wickets out before the close...

Leg-spin and pace often seem to be the most likely methods of dismissing tail-enders.

The landmark achieved, how will Moeen play now? There's 33 minutes left in the day (Pakistan are going to be well short as they've only bowled 74 overs) and the field is still back offering him a single. Sohail to bowl, Moeen plays out five dot balls before pulling the last ball for four.

A fantastic way to raise your hundred - with a six. Set up so very nicely in the slot and Moeen Ali dismissed it over mid-wicket. That's the way you do it. A great hundred, absolutely brilliant batting. On a pitch where the others have struggled, Moeen Ali has done it with extreme ease.

He's done it! Yasir tosses one up, and Moeen obliges as he hoists a six over mid-wicket and towards the famous Oval gasholder to bring up his third Test century, and his second of the summer.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq may have dozed off there for a minute, as he leaves the field back for the last ball of the over, allowing Moeen to pick off a single and keep the strike.

Time for leg-spin - are Pakistan dangling the carrot and hoping to get Moeen caught going for a six for his century? Yasir Shah bowls, the second ball is short and loose, it scatters the pigeons and they run two. He's up to 97...

A single takes the Worcestershire all-rounder to 95, exposing Anderson to the last ball of the over. Which he survives.

Sohail Khan, who has celebrated each of his four wickets with increasing exuberance, pings in a bouncer which is so high and out of Moeen's reach that it's signalled as an aerial wide which brings up the 300 for England. To be honest, Sarfraz does well to take that one at full stretch. Moeen rides his luck as Sohail finds the edge of a full-blooded drive - but Younus Khan at slip almost dives away from it. Moeen to 94.

Wahab's field for Moeen is quite simple - a slip, then the other eight fielders on, or near, the boundary. After four dot balls, four fielders come in. The fifth is a bouncer, which Moeen pulls out of hooking at the last minute, and the last is a bouncer which Moeen manages to fend out to deep mid-wicket for a single to farm the strike.

It's been a very good performance by Pakistan. England did well in the middle session and made a comeback. Moeen Ali will be eyeing his 100. It's been another scintillating innings from the left-hander.

Anderson has two balls of the over to survive. Survive? Pah. The "Burnley Lara" is off the mark straight away, pushing the ball past the bowler and dashing back for a second run. Sohail, one short of a five-for, fires in the last ball which Anderson prods to point. Moeen to face the next over on 89.

It was pitched up and it's seamed back and hit the stumps. That is the way to bowl on a pitch like this. Sohail Khan is at his best when's he's pitching the ball up. Another healthy haul for him.

    Finn b Sohail 8 (Eng 296-9)

Bowled him! Finn has his off stump knocked back, trying to drive the ball back towards the bowler. Only James Anderson to come - I wonder if this will prompt a change of tactics from Moeen, who is 11 short of three figures. Four wickets for Sohail.

Pakistan disperse the field, inviting Moeen Ali to take a single so they can bowl at Steven Finn. Again, Moeen shows confidence in his partner by taking a single off the first ball - and Finn has some of the crowd on their feet as he stands tall and fluently pulls Sohail for three through mid-wicket.
