Very much a day when I'd be advising anyone at The Oval to wear a hat if you're sitting in the sun. Plenty of effort from Woakes, but he can't dislodge Azhar Ali who has made it his mission to anchor this innings - and he's doing a good job so far. Another maiden.

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with punishing fielding sides for slow over-rates, no one has touched on whether or not the batting side should be punished. In certain circumstances, it may be possible for the batting side to delay things, (dabbing the pitch, doing up boot laces, changing gloves/bats, having a natter in the middle, re-taking guards etc).

Finn 3-1-6-1
Shafiq is looking busy, trying to push the score along but is rightly sent back as he starts to attempt a run which was never there. Finn's done well this morning (if you can take three overs as a reasonable sample), he's bowled tightly and asked the batsmen questions.

That's like Sachin. Sachin Tendulkar used to play the straight-batted punch wide of mid-on.
19 overs
Paul Collingwood (the only Englishman to lift an ICC global limited-overs trophy) and Graham Gooch (erm... the only man with three World Cup final loser's medals) are looking on from a hospitality area. Azhar Ali fluently guides Chris Woakes through mid-wicket for four, lovely shot.

Asad Shafiq has batted has batted above number six only five times in his career.
Trail by 272
Asad Shafiq is the new man in - having bagged a pair batting at six at Edgbaston, he was elevated to number three on the scorecard for this game, but is in at four because of the nightwatchman. Finn has him in trouble early on, having to get up on his tiptoes to defend a short ball. But he's off the mark with an off-drive for four and will be pleased to have avoided a third successive duck.

It's a beautiful delivery from Finn. The seam is absolutely perfect. A bit of out shape, bit of bounce. Root got his hands the wrong way down. He's quite fortunate it bounces off the wrist and goes forward. The second time round he was very cool.
Yasir c Root b Finn 26 (Pak 52-2)
Yasir's luck finally runs out as he falls three balls after the drinks break - edging to second slip where Joe Root makes no mistake in comparison to that Hales drop, although he juggles it and catches at the second attempt. (Hales, by the way, is off the field, having temporarily given way to 12th man Jake Ball).

I wouldn't mind taking my guard on a day like this. It's going to take some extremely good bowling, or extremely poor batting to lose wickets. Pakistan should be able to bat out the whole day at least. Put it this way, if Pakistan can't bat out the day they don't deserve to win this game.

Greg: Irony. Hales drops Yasir after Yasir 'caught' him yesterday!
Usman: If Alex Hales spent as much time practicing his catching as he did in berating Yasir Shah he might have caught that.
SportsMind: Hales should have caught that on the bounce and claimed the catch.
And Pakistan's nightwatchman has survived through to the drinks break unscathed. Time for a rethink from England?

I'm really impressed by Azhar's technique. He takes his time, which is always a sign of a good technician.
Azhar 16, Yasir 26
Reprieved, Yasir continues to ride his luck, as an inside edge scoots down the leg side for four, quite a fortunate way for Pakistan to pass 50. He then scampers a single, almost sliding-tackles the crease at the bowler's end feet first, but looks relieved to get off strike.

You won't see an easier slip catch off a fast bowler. Hales is standing quite deep. It was straight in and straight out.

He sort of reverse-cupped it. It was a bit too fast for him.
Pak 47-1
Dropped! Yasir edges new bowler Chris Woakes' first ball, and is put down by Alex Hales at gully/fifth slip. Neck-high, but it didn't stick. Hales slams the ground in frustration.

Woakes is batting beautifully, bowling well. He's taking his batting form into his bowling.
