Much debate on TMS about the selection of England's side for their upcoming tours of Bangladesh and India. Alec Stewart has described both Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid as "number two spinners", and has advocated a call-up for Surrey's Gareth Batty.

Given that Batty will be 39 by the time England get to India, and played the last of his seven Tests in 2005, would that be a retrograde step? Or an inspired veteran horses-for-courses selection like Shaun Udal in 2006? Do let us know.

The most important thing is to understand your role. If they say to Moeen he's coming in at seven or eight, he knows that role and is perfect. He's a batsman who bowls. In the winter if they tell him you'll move up the order he can prepare for it. If they change roles game to game, there's no continuity.

There's a calmness about Moeen at the crease. The scoreboard is ticking and 20 or 30 minutes later he's playing his natural game. He's so pleasing on the eye and it was wonderful watching him yesterday.

The last two mornings my walk from London Blackfriars train station to my office has crossed paths with the Pakistan team leaving their hotel. Yesterday they were all jokes and smiles, not so much today.

England seamer Steven Finn on Sky Sports: "Initially we'll be looking for as conventional swing and being as patient as we can. It might reverse later. We've got a good score on the board. We need to be relentless.

"I'm confident with the way I'm bowling at the moment. I'm happy and looking to continue that."

  7. Moeen brings up century with a sixpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 12 August 2016

But Moeen found a useful ally down the order in Chris Woakes as the pair racked up the runs - and although England were nine down with Moeen still shy of three figures, the tail hung around long enough for the Worcestershire left-hander to bring up his century with a six.

Wickets then tumbled before lunch, but Pakistan were unable to press their advantage in the afternoon as centurion Moeen Ali was dropped twice early in his innings, while Jonny Bairstow was "caught" off a no-ball.

"Again, at a vital time, we dropped vital catches," Pakistan spin coach Mushtaq Ahmed admitted.

BBC Weather's Darren Bett: "It couldn't be more straightforward for today. Blue skies, little or no cloud and temperature will be around 20 degrees. It will get up to around 26 degrees. There will be a westerly breeze in the afternoon. Today will be the warmest day of the Test. Things get a bit complicated for Saturday as there could be some light rain."

Yesterday's first major talking point was a controversial decision to give Alex Hales out caught. Have a look and make your own minds up.

Morning, everyone - hope you've been enjoying TMS's highlights show. After a rather engrossing first day, it's all eyes on The Oval again as England look to keep up the momentum which Moeen Ali's century gave them on day one.

If you didn't catch them last night, here's the match report and Pint-Sized TMS's review of day one:
