It's straight at him. As far as caught-and-bowleds go, it came at him at a nice height. Even so, they're not easy. But it's still another one down.

And another one goes down! This time it's a caught-and-bowled chance - Azhar punches the ball straight back to Finn, he's a tall man who has to get down low but he can't hold on. Oh dear.

D Rudden: No Geoffrey, you can catch them all, it's called Pokemon Go!

Ben Pearson: Has Geoffrey been playing a bit of Pokemon Go recently?

It's still Finn from the Pavilion End, but Azhar plunders back-to-back boundaries, one an orthodox cover drive, one a well-timed pull up on his toes. Both are enthusiastically cheered by a flag-waving Pakistan fan in the crowd.

They all fancy Moeen, look to whack him don't they? Go on Moeen, it's your day, just like yesterday.

    Azhar 27, Shafiq 20

Time for yesterday's centurion Moeen Ali to bowl some off-spin from the Vauxhall End as lunch approaches. Slip and a short leg posted. Azhar punches a single to mid-on, while with a deep point already in place, Pakistan help[ themselves to a couple more easy singles. (Somewhere I can hear a retired spinner, Graeme Swann perhaps, growling at this field placing as a negative tactic).

In football time-wasting is dealt with a yellow card (generally). The simple solution is to book the fielder in question (or the captain if it's a shared effort), two bookings and you're off for the remainder of the session.

A quick bit of strapping and a speedy use of the magic spray, and Azhar's ready to resume. He negotiates the rest of Finn's over.

Hugh Grant: England badly needs a slip fielding coach How much practice do they put in? Seems like they are not sharp.

Theo Bowyer: England can't catch a cold this morning... My grandma would've caught them in her pinny with a stick of rhubarb in hand!

Steven Finn, who looks like he could do with a haircut (just a trim to get his fringe out of his eyes), to continue - it feels like Shafiq has only just come in, but this pair have added 26 - Shafiq having added 12 since he was dropped. Azhar is then dealt a blow on his right hand as he defends a lifter from Finn. The Pakistan physio comes on for a visit, while Boycs on TMS has no sympathy. "Get some proper gloves," he chunters.

You must catch it when it's hard. No wonder the coach of England says they've got to start catching better. Before anybody says that Pakistan are not great catchers, the point is if you want England to do well, you don't worry about the opposition. Concentrate on what you can do, and what you can do better.

    25 overs

Still bright and sunny at The Oval as Woakes is still bowling a good line and length, but Azhar and Shafiq are still helping themselves to ones and twos when they can. We're just over 20 minutes from lunch.

How about if a team fails to bowl five overs in a day, then they must field for the first five overs of the following day wearing clown shoes and red noses… or flippers and a snorkel… or snow shoes and goggles. Each Test could have different theme depending on the locale.

Pakistan's dropped catches was one of the themes of day one - England will hope that those drops won't be what we're still talking about at 18:30 BST tonight. Azhar advances to 23 after pulling Finn for three.

You can't catch them all, but we seem to drop what we'd call club level, regulation ones. I understand nobody's going to catch them all. But percentage-wise at some stage these will hurt you.

A paranoid thought crosses my mind - that's Anderson's bowling hand which shelled the catch, hope he's OK. Shafiq drills the ball through mid-off, Moeen Ali gives chase and dives but can't prevent the boundary. And Boycott is in the house...

And another slip catch goes down, and once more Chris Woakes is the unlucky bowling. Shafiq drives, James Anderson moves to his right at third slip but the ball grazes his right hand and flies away for four.

Three slips and a short leg for Shafiq, who guides Finn for a three past mid-on. Azhar is on the defensive as he can only fend off a short ball and drop it at his feet.
