Well, when you've got four wickets may as well get the debutant on eh? Because, why not? Iftikhar rolls his arm over and still manages to get shouts of "lovely bowling" from the keeper for his efforts. Because, why not? Bairstow gets a single off the first ball before Ballance shuts up shop.

Yasir trying to mess with England's minds a bit by shaking up his field. He keeps two slips and a silly point to the right-handed Bairstow, who has moved on to 13 off 12 balls with another four. Some in the crowd think they've seen enough - or that they'd rather start drowning their sorrows a bit earlier.

Can the captains and the managers get together tomorrow and arrange to play one more Test? Move a couple of ODIs next to each other and play a decider.

Like a cup final heading into the final 15 minutes, where only one team looks capable of creating a scoring opportunity, this game has entered into a comfortable phase for Pakistan. Bairstow relieves some of the pressure with a four to third man as he guides Amir's wide-ish delivery away. And like an excited eight-year-old on a lovely summer's day, Pakistan will hate to see play called off for the day. How they'd enjoy more time to break into England's tail.

Scott Ennis: England would be the best team in the world by a mile if they stopped insisting on playing in London so much.

Ruth Brooksbank: Think I prefer the BBC Olympic Medal Alert to the Cricket Alert today - too many England wickets falling.

Root lbw Yasir 39 (Eng 74-5)

Shouts of "Pakistan jeetega!" - Pakistan will win - erupt around The Oval as Joe Root takes the walk back. The ball hit his knee roll as he stepped back into the crease, Yasir's quicker delivery would have gone to hit leg stump, as the ball-tracker shows and the on-field umpire's decision is proven right.

I think he's stuffed. On the back foot. it didn't spin, it was maybe a slider. Or might just be creeping past leg stump?

  9. England lbw reviewpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

Root gets a skidding delivery from Yasir as he backs inside the crease. It strikes the pad, Pakistan appeal and umpire gives. Root has a brief chat from 22 yards away with Ballance and then reviews.

Joe Root (25 years 227 days) is the fourth youngest player to reach 4,000 runs in Test cricket. The three younger were Sachin Tendulkar (24 years 223 days), Alastair Cook and Kane Wiliamson.

I wonder which of the England players would run off shouting 'don't panic, don't panic' whilst holding a bomb in their hands. Root gets to his 4,000th Test run with a double off Amir, but then nearly gives it away by edging one wide of off stump. It lands short of second slip and the England-supporting sections of The Oval breathe a little easier.

    Root 32, Ballance 4

Yasir, who is surely not far from a 'smiling assassin' nickname, gets to test out his own crowding field on Ballance. He puts a slip, leg slip, a short leg and silly point, making Ballance feel like me when I get stuck in a box junction with traffic waiting to pounce from all four sides. Ballance has to hold out for three deliveries this time and does well.

Apart from Adam Lyth against New Zealand, no-one in the top five apart from Cook and Root has got a hundred for England in the last year. Vince has had seven games, Hales has had 11, who do you bring in? I thought it was wrong to drop Ian Bell for South Africa, but I wouldn't go back to him now.

Lovely field set to Ballance by Amir. Two slips, a leg slip, and deep short-leg to give it a sort of umbrella-like look. Amir rains down the short stuff as well, seeing as he's put all these catching positions, but Ballance to his credit holds his own for four deliveries.

An eventful over, Pakistan nearly had a fourth wicket but Ballance's front foot stride saves him. It was umpire's call in the end. Yasir is getting the ball to turn and Pakistan will want to hand him as many overs as possible in this last 30-odd minutes of play.

It was clattering into middle-and-leg stump, so you can see why the decision was reviewed, but it hit him too far outside the line.

Bit of a desperate review there from Yasir Shah. Once the umpire's given it 'not out', unless it's a bad, bad decision - a howler - it's likely that at least one part of it will be umpire's call.

  20. Review turned downpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

Nope. Pakistan's luck doesn't hold this time. Ballance remains at the crease, despite replays showing the ball would have hit the stumps. This is because Ballance's stride out for the sweep was more than 2.5m. Misbah not pleased with the decision and seeks an explanation from the umpire. Yasir still has a smile on his face. Got to love the man.
