If they can bat properly, Pakistan will always be a force to be reckoned with. This was the big tour for Misbah. If it had gone wrong for him big time he would have retired I think.

David Westgarth: Vince reminds me of an early Ian Bell. Elegant. Full of potential. Silly dismissals. Bell turned out alright.

The wily Yasir, with 5-62 from 26 overs, continues to try to separate England's last-wicket stand. Anderson pushes the score along, while Finn can't connect with a big slog-sweep.

And if you're hoping the weather might save England... it won't. Bright and sunny skies over Kennington.

I think Barnsley might be a lovely place for a fifth Test.

Even though there's only one wicket to take, there's a drinks break. Even though Pakistan shouldn't need it - and England shouldn't deserve it.

While you're waiting, here's another look at Stuart Broad's dismissal.

Mohammad Amir will have to complete fellow left-armer Wahab's over, as Pakistan are reduced to a three-man attack - not that it should trouble them, with only one wicket to take. Anderson adds a two and a single to stretch the lead to 12, but we're not going to make it to tea here.

Don't think Amir will mind coming on will he? He might sneak in for a Test wicket.

  8. Wahab removed from the attackpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 14 August 2016

    Eng 223-9

Wahab's off! Two balls into his 12th over, having already had two warning, he runs on the wicket for a third time (in the opinion of the umpire) and is taken out of the attack for the rest of the innings.

So, James Anderson walks out to bat with England effectively 7-9. And he reverse-sweeps too... Yasir, sensing a sixth wicket, appeals but umpire Erasmus shakes his head.

That is Yasir's sixth five-fer of his Test career, and his second against England.

Straight off the top of the bat. Just a nice catch for Younus Khan and it's a five-fer for Yasir Shah.

    Broad c Younus b Yasir 5 (Eng 221-9)

What on earth was he thinking? Broad judges that when you're effectively 7-8 in a one-innings game, it's an appropriate time to play a reverse sweep... which provides Younus Khan a straightforward catch at slip.

Naturally, he looks around as if he's thinking of reviewing the decision - but there are none left. He can thank Alex Hales and Joe Root for that. HotSpot shows it hit the bat.

Ballance is a grafter but I don't think he was playing well enough to be picked. I don't think England picked him at the height of his form.

New ball available in eight overs

Pakistan keep most of the field deep for Broad, clearly they want to bowl at Finn - but Broad is confident enough to take the single when it's there, so I'm not sure that fielding tactic will last. Finn uses his height to drop a lifting ball from Wahab at his feet - it reaches the short leg fielder on the bounce.

I've been very, very frustrated by England this week. Last week I thought some players had taken a step forward. But this week I've seen a few rabbits. Vince I don't think will make it. which is sad because I do think he's a good player, but it's a mental thing. Hales goes on the plane, but what I want to see from him is more aggression on the pitches in Bangladesh and India.

Wahab belatedly has a third slip in for Finn, who rotates the strike with a single. The field switches for the left-handed Broad, Wahab still has to go round the wicket because he's on his final warning for running on the pitch. But remarkably, there are four men on the boundary - do they think Broad will go for the big one and hole out? Broad's off the mark with a risky single, having to dive for the crease.
