Nice one, cheers Steph. All looking good for England. Sarfraz is straight into the action with a lovely on drive on the move for four. Great placement.

Speaking of cricket on TV, how about the kids show Sloggers by the late, great Sid Waddell? There was one episode where the team played a touring side of loud, proud, obnoxious Yorkshire lads. My mates from Pudsey St Lawrence played said obnoxious lads in the show. Typecast.

Looking again, it was definitely bat before pad. Babar threw his eye to the sky before dragging himself off the field. Sarfraz Ahmed the new man, England only a wicket or two away from being bang on top here. Still Moeen Ali, still more singles than a night in Reflex. Here's Phil Dawkes.

You look at that first review, which was an obvious edge behind. They used it up without being required and it leaves you vulnerable in situations like this.

Babar lbw Rashid 40 (Pak 113-3)

Oh, this is a bad un. Babar Azam is given out lbw to Adil Rashid despite getting an inside edge on to his front pad. Remember, Sharjeel Khan used up the only review earlier on, asking for another look at an edge behind despite the fact he hit the cover off it. Sharjeel might want to hide from Babar for a little while. Nothing in the delivery, just a prod forward to defend. Big bonus for England.

Dave: The excellent Mitchell and Webb sketch about the making of a dramatic cricket blockbuster. "Cricket? In Yorkshire?!"

Andrew Milner: Cricket bats were Vivian's weapon of choice in Young Ones and Bottom featured the great game twice.

Alexander Clegane: Mrs McCluskey from Grange Hill bowled a "Trevor Chappell 1981" at Ant Jones in Grange Hill once. Shameful.

Very sleepy stuff out there now. Moeen twirling his beard, off-breaks fired in, plenty of space for singles to be milked. Repeat. It's a phony war, a game before a game.

Paul Harris: Always plenty of cricket on midsummer murders, though also a lot of murders so probably not the safest place to play.

Ian Elmer: Doctor Who. Peter Davison's Doctor played a mean game of cricket in an episode called 'Black Orchid'.

  9. Pak 104-2published at 22 overs

No, Moneyball doesn't count. Finally we see Adil Rashid, England's Mr Dependable in ODI cricket this summer. Slip in place, leg-breaks tossed wide of off stump, almost taking the leg side out of the game. Babar, the batsman, makes a wristy symbol with his right hand, perhaps a man vexed by what's going on. Three singles.

I'm going to throw this out there - England haven't bowled all that well just yet. Liam Plunkett was wayward, Joe Root got a wicket but went at more than a run a ball and now Moeen Ali is too short, being worked fine by Babar for four. Any chance of seeing Adil Rashid?

Steve Kendall: Seem to remember an episode of Ever Decreasing Circles containing a cricket match...Paul no doubt, outdoing Martin again?!!?

    Azhar 37, Babar 27

I've just found the Wikipedia page of The Final Test. Apparently Denis Compton, Len Hutton and Cyril Washbrook had cameos. England are looking for something here, Wood bowling quickly but this Pakistan pair remain relatively untroubled. Azhar was dropped twice on nine, remember. We're into the middle overs of an ODI. I'll wake you up when something happens.

Joe Root is given the big stick, with Eoin Morgan turning to Moeen Ali. No Adil Rashid, who bowled so well against Sri Lanka, yet. Can't be long, especially with two right-handers at the crease. Five singles. I reckon Pakistan will fancy getting after Moeen. I'm not sure they rate his bowling.

We're back under way after that odd break, with Wood continuing his interrupted over. Was that a hint of a no-ball there? Someone give the third umpire a kick, make sure he's awake.

Alex Pitt: No Bairstow is baffling. On current form a much better batsman than Stokes for ODIs, if Stokes can't bowl he's half the player.

Martin Davies: Random Stat: Ben Stokes has the lowest ODI batting average of this entire England XI.

  19. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 17.1 overs

    Pak 82-2

This is all a bit village. I'm pretty sure the umpires have forgotten the drinks break here. Mark Wood bowls one delivery, then we remember the refreshments, so the game stops. Have you ever been at a club game where the skipper is frantically calling to the pavilion asking if drinks are ready? This is the opposite of that.

It is a nice solid start from Pakistan. They have lost only two wickets and they are now looking to accelerate.
