  1. Pak 82-2published at 17 overs

On the subject of that Fred Trueman appearance in Dad's Army, I'm trying to think of any other cricketing TV shows or films. There was Sloggers and Outside Edge, but after that I'm struggling. I'm also struggling to see why Joe Root has been given another over. Too full, driven for four by Babar.

  2. Pak 70-2published at 16 overs

    Azhar 28, Babar 14

Mark Wood comes back into the attack to bowl some 90mph thunderbolts in the south-coast sunshine. Short run-up, whippy action, walk back like he's being controlled by a puppeteer. Lots of chanting from the Pakistan fans in attendance as Azhar drives for three.

  3. Pak 65-2published at 15 overs

Joe Root gets another over after that wicket, but he might not get too many more after serving up the rankest long hop you will ever see in international cricket. Halfway down, cut for four by Babar. Plenty of club cricketers would have given that the treatment. Eight from it. Have a rest, Joe.

It is not really going too quickly for Pakistan. They are struggling to get into one-day mode. They are waiting for the bad ball, but England aren't bowling many. They need to move the ball around and rotate the strike.

  5. Pak 57-2published at 14 overs

    Plunkett 4-0-20-0

Never mind the one in pink, what's the one on the far left doing? There was an episode of Dad's Army where they played cricket. Fred Trueman guest-starred. One of the great cricketing cameos. There's not enough cricket on telly or in the movies. Better from Plunkett, straighter line as the ice-cream man makes enough money to put his kids through university. Two singles from it.

Looking again, Hales almost made a hash of the catch, nearly running past it. Babar Azam is the new man, a leg slip for company. Another wicket here and England will be bang on top. Joe Root has 1-5 from his two overs. Very handy for the sixth bowler.

It is a straightforward sweep but in his movement he got the top-edge and couldn't control it. England needed that wicket. Root has done his job.

    Hafeez c Hales b Root 11 (Pak 52-2)

Golden arm Joe Root does it, enticing Mohammad Hafeez to top edge a sweep. Remarkably, Alex Hales clings on. The shot is on, but it's poor execution from Hafeez, who picks out the man at deep square leg. Pretty soft cricket. England will be pretty happy with this start.

  10. Pak 52-1published at 12 overs

Quieter in Southampton now. The early energy dimmed, everyone into the rhythm of the game. Spectators settled. Suncream, pint, wondering if it is too early to eat the first pork pie. Probably should start soon, you've got four of them, scotch eggs, sandwiches, sausage rolls and pasta salad. Leg side again from Plunkett, clipped fine for four by Azhar. He's basically bowling a left-hand line to a pair of right-handers.

It is not an expansive start. It is not an 80 in the 10 overs. But these two batsmen are still there. And Pakistan have wickets in hand.

  12. Pak 48-1published at 11 overs

This is interesting. As soon as the first powerplay is done, England get Joe Root into the attack. With only five bowlers in the side, it's a good way to a hide a couple from the sixth. He replaces Chris Woakes, who would have had a wicket were it not for this drop from Alex Hales.

    Azhar 18, Hafeez 10

Bar that appeal, Plunkett's bowling has been a bit ropey. Another leg-stump delivery is flicked over square leg for four by Hafeez. Back on the subject of the sub fielders, it was Wood and Moeen off the field. I think they forgot to make dinner reservations.

He didn't move his feet at all. He got himself into a bit of a mess. It is frustrating as a bowler. Seeing the replay doesn't give you any respite.

  16. Pak 41-1published at 9.3 overs

We see this so often. Umpire's call for impact on leg stump. If it had been given out, it would have stayed out, but it wasn't so it isn't overturned. England see the replay and throw hands in the air in disbelief. I'm not entirely sure what they can't believe, they can see the pictures for themselves...

England are convinced here. Plunkett to Hafeez. Very full, very straight. Not out, but what is it missing?

With Wood coming back, England are blessed with fast bowlers. Woakes has found another gear. He is bending his back more. It is great to see Mark Wood back. Exciting stuff.

  19. Pak 37-1published at 9 overs

Azhar, dropped more times than Graeme Hick, has men lurking on the leg side, but picks the gap when Woakes strays. Chris Jordan, the sub fielder, gives chase but can't prevent the boundary. Who could Jordan possibly be on the field for? They've only been out there for nine overs. Now Jonny Bairstow is on too! At this rate they'll be picking them out of the crowd.

It was at a catchable height. Buttler did all the hard work. He got down early and got his hand to it.
