  1. dropped catch

Azhar dropped on 9published at 8 overs

    Pak 33-1

If the Hales catch should have been taken, then this would have been a worldie from Jos Buttler. Still, he got a hand to it, so this tough school is putting it down as a drop. One stubbled, northern pacer replaces another as Liam Plunkett is on for Mark Wood. Too leggy to Azhar Ali, who tickles fine. Buttler gets across, dives to his left and just gets a finger end on, pushing it round the corner for four. Chance, but a very tough one.

Hales is at that gully position, maybe a little close to be honest. He has absolutely crunched it at him and an awkward height. It hit him before he saw it.

  3. dropped catch

Azhar dropped on 9published at 7 overs

    Pak 27-1

Down! Alex Hales shells one at gully. Azhar Ali cutting Chris Woakes. It goes quickly, Hales has to move a little to his right, but it's one that should be taken. Hales immediately lets his team-mates, the spectators and the rest of the world know he hasn't seen it clearly, but that might not wash. When it comes to catching, England have had their hands in the butter all summer long.

Ian Bradley: How tactically inept do you have to be to challenge a caught behind you've clearly nicked? One allowed, thrown in the bin.

Simon Goodall: Since when has Stuart Broad been advising Pakistan on DRS??? What a shocking review that was.

  5. Pak 27-1 (Wood 3-0-14-1)published at 6 overs

Mohammed Hafeez, barely a run in the Test series, is the new man. England immediately post a leg gully, so Hafeez might get some short stuff. Replays of the wicket don't do Sharjeel any favours, especially when the ball was in front of his nose when it made contact with his bat.

You have to have half a clue as a batter. It is a really quick bouncer that has done him for pace. But you must know if you've top-edged it. Maybe he was just enjoying himself too much out there in the sun?

  7. wicket

    Sharjeel c Buttler b Wood 16 (Pak 25-1)

That's a review worse than the ones for the new Ghostbusters film. Short from Mark Wood, Sharjeel Khan hooks but is done for pace. Top edge through to Jos Buttler. Even the hard-of-hearing chap in the members knew there was an edge. Sharjeel, though, wastes the review before he's sent on his way. England strike.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 5.1 overs

    Pak 25-1

I can't believe Sharjeel is reviewing this. Surely he's edged Wood behind?

It shaped and nipped back in. It is close. Worth a look, but it is just outside leg stump.

  10. Pak 25-0 (Azhar 8, Sharjeel 16)published at 5 overs

This would have been out. Ball goes nowhere, Pakistan run and Azhar Ali would have been gone had Chris Woakes' left foot swipe got it on to the stumps. Sharjeel, backside sticking out towards square leg, isn't too fussed about running, swiping across the line for four. Next ball, Woakes asks, but that's pitched a good way outside the leg stump.

  12. Pak 18-0published at 4 overs

In case you didn't know, the third umpire is calling no-balls in this series as part of an ICC experiment. He has cameras square of the wicket and will send a message to the on-field umpire via a vibrating device. Wood, now pushing the speedo towards 93mph, rattles Azhar's pads and asks for leg before. That's hit him outside the line. We'll keep watching that speedo. 93mph is quicker than a hiccup.

England have lost each of their last five ODIs to have taken place at the Ageas Bowl. They last won there in June 2012.

  14. Pak 14-0 (Azhar 5, Sharjeel 9)published at 3 overs

We're properly up and running now, the ball flying to strange places. An Azhar cut off Woakes is over the slips for four. This time it's Catfish and the Bottlemen. Better, but I still don't get why they try to turn the cricket into a disco. Am I just being miserable?

Mark Wood, back from ankle surgery and bowling with more gas than Mike Gatting after beans on toast. Speedo touching 90, but the burly Sharjeel is on to a short ball, pulling in front of square for four. He's a biffer, Sharjeel. Music greets the boundary, loud commercial dance you might find in Walkabout on a Friday night. Could get tedious.

Just a bit of bounce and a slight hint of away swing for Woakes. He charged in and hit the pitch.

  18. Pak 0-0published at 1 over

Bright sunshine, cloudless sky, but still a hint of swing with the new white leather for Woakes. When Azhar cuts, Jason Roy pulls off a blinding stop at point. Keep an eye on Roy, he's electric in the field. A maiden to begin, greeted by generous applause.
