England need 10 more to win

Lorna, I'm sure a certain Sachin Tendulkar has won the man of the match despite being on the losing side. But I take your point that it probably doesn't happen enough. Amir joins Wahab Riaz in finishing his 10 overs. England knocked just one off the required runs and something tells me this will slowly creep into the final over.

Lorna Leach: It annoys me that you can't seem to win MOTM if you're on a losing side. Why should that matter? class play doesn't pick sides.

Russell Anderson: Can't a bowler win MOM for once? Woakes and Wood both outstanding. That's why we're winning this one.

England need 11 off 30 balls

Have Pakistan left it too late for a comeback? Would appear so. Root's dismissal brings Chris Woakes in. No mug with the bat, he of the golden summer.

Root looks thoroughly cheesed off. It was going across him and he was trying to whip it over deep mid-wicket, but a leading edge went straight up.

    Root c Malik b Wahab 89 (Eng 240-6)

That's the knighthood gone then? Root somehow gets a leading edge to a fuller delivery from Wahab, and it went so high even the cameraman lost track of it for a second. But eventually it lands in the hands of Malik. Root looks frustrated with himself and so he should be I think. A hundred has been staring at him for a while and he's missed his chance.

You've missed the history! 35.4 was a no-ball called by the 4th ump.

    Root 88, Moeen 12

We're past the 42-over point that Alec Stewart predicted we'd finish at. But England are definitely on course for that win that will make it 2-0 in the series with three left to play. The only question is, will Root get a move on for his century?

Moeen showed us his front foot flowing drive earlier, he now goes on the backfoot to Amir, but the result is the same, a four.

I can't really see where Pakistan are going to get a win from in this five-match series.

Moeen survives! Wahab's superb delivery swung in the air and caught Moeen on his feet. Suggestions of an inside edge, but none of that. However, replays show the ball missing the stumps and the umpire has to do the hands crossed across chest thing. The sort of thing you'd find on a moody album cover.

Moeen reviewed it straightaway. It looked very adjacent.

    Moeen 8 (Eng 232-5)

Moeen is trapped lbw by Wahab Riaz and the umpire gives it. Instant review from the left-hander.

    England need 21 to win

I've said before how Moeen Ali's batting action so closely resembles Yuvraj Singh's. A flowing high-to-low swing that is effective against the fuller deliveries and looks good as well. Amir gets first-hand experience of the same as Moeen cracks him through the cover region for four.

    Target 252

Buttler will not be impressed at his short stint. Moeen Ali is the new man, and the good folk on TMS are debating the man of the match award. However, Tuffers takes the philosophical approach and first asks "what is a man of the match?".

He eventually nominates Root. Glad we got there.

Jos is quick but not that quick. There are no alarms for England but it will be irritating for Buttler. No-one likes to be run out. It is one of those that you can cut out.

Buttler run out Yasir 4 (Eng 219-5)

Excellent throw from Yasir, who is fractionally late at getting home after Root called for the single with a dab to backward point. The narrowest of margins made the difference.

Or what about Root to be given an honour? Sir Joe Root? I'm sure Mrs May watching on can make a few phone calls etc. I mean, a productive cricketing summer is just as good as a gold medal surely? Seven off that last over, four of them coming off leg byes.

    Root 81, Buttler 3

Root moves closer to his hundred as he sweeps Yasir Shah to fine leg for four. Somebody mentioned earlier about Root being a shout for SPOTY. That double-hundred in the Test series would certainly help the cause wouldn't it?

It's in the bag for England. It hasn't really caught fire today. I suppose if you have a side 2-3 it kind of takes the sting out of it.
