Alistair Johnson: Hales has never, ever been prolific - a few massive scores surrounded by a host of failures at county level.

Stoney: Alex Fails, sorry, bloomin autocorrect. Alex Hales, has surely used up all his chances. Moeen to open and Bairstow in.

Alex Franks: Surely Buttler, Ali, Duckett, Bell-Drummond are all better options to open than Hales, allowing Bairstow into the middle order.

Spin at both ends - in the form of the twinkle-toed Shoaib Malik - on what is becoming a dusty, sub-continental-type track, despite the emerald tinge. Just the one off the over. Pakistan will take that.

England are coasting. These two are playing exceptionally well. Except when captain Morgan nearly ran out Root again! Pakistan have got to get the quicker bowlers on again. England might win this with eight overs to spare.

    Target 252

Root doing pretty much as he pleases in this innings, sweeping Yasir for immense power and superb placement for his fourth four. He can only manage a single with the same stroke next ball before Morgan helps himself to a couple. The partnership is now worth 52.

In-form batsman hitting fifties for fun at county level is selected for England Test or ODI team. Bottles it for first few matches but consensus is to "give him a chance". Batsman rewards selectors' patience with maybe one or two good innings but then goes on to bottle it in the subsequent three or four games. Consensus then shifts to maybe drop this batsman and look at this other one who is currently hitting fifties for fun at county level. And repeat. And repeat.

Uh oh! Wahab in trouble with umpire Erasmus, who is fed up with giving friendly advice about following through on to the danger area and gives the quickie an official warning. This was a theme of the Test series, if you remember. Are the umpires being more strict these days or the bowlers more wayward? Three comfortable singles off the over. England in control.

These are perfect conditions for the ball to reverse - abrasive ends on these used pitches at Lord's.

    Target 252

Our first sighting of leg-spinner Yasir Shah, on in place of Imad Wasim. Root starts as he means to go on, timing the pants off one to collect three wide of mid-on. Too short from Messi-lookalike Yasir in that over, but he gets away with them - two more singles to the total.

Hales lost my support when he behaved badly, and was rightly fined, following the umpire's decision he didn't like in a previous Test.

People judging Alex Hales on his ODI form after a disappointing Test series. If we're going to do that, how is Eoin Morgan anywhere near the team?

There's very little sympathy coming in for Alex Hales. It's not difficult to see why. He's in a bad trot, the poor lad. Should England persevere with him or is it time to make a change? And will this have any bearing on his place in the Test team, which is far from nailed down?

Drinks break - Eng 72-2published at 16 overs

    Wahab 3-0-17-0

There's a pattern developing here: Wahab trying to bounce Morgan out; Morgan attempting to counter-attack his way out of form. This is the most emphatic of his pull shots, hit powerfully in the air over backward square-leg for four. An attempted cut off the final ball is less successful. Thin air only.

    Eng 66-2

The tall, rangy left-arm spinner Imad operating round the wicket to the left-handed Morgan, who drives for four through cover. Then almost a second run-out in two games for Root, who would have been well out had the throw from mid-on hit the stumps at the non-striker's end. Needlessly risky from England.

  13. Eng 58-2published at 14 overs

    Root 29, Morgan 15

Wahab continues with the short stuff to Morgan, but the England skipper won't be cowed, pulling very fine for four. When Wahab pitches up, he can't quite muscle a drive past point.

Morgan gets his first boundary of the innings with a reverse-sweep, but it's far from convincing. He barely gets anything on it, the ball scoots very fine - and would have been close to hitting his off pole had he not made contact. Morgan and Root then trade singles off the accurate Imad.

  17. Eng 47-2published at 12 overs

    Target 252

Here we go! Wahab Riaz, Pakistan's quickest bowler, into the attack. England's captain Eoin Morgan, struggling for form. Eeesh! Wahab  almost gets his man. Short from the left-armer and Morgan, feet off the ground, fends it away from in front of his face. Then Root, as is his wont, then makes it all looks ridiculously easy as he adds three to his score. Six off the over.

  18. Eng 41-2published at 11 overs

    Root 23, Morgan 4

Imad attempting to apply the brakes to this England innings - just the two singles off it. The slow left-armer has got an impressively well-trimmed beard, with barely a hair of place. Almost like a Lego man. I suspect he spends a fair bit of time in the mirror.

Whisper it, but Pakistan have a chance here. Hasan, not dissimilar to James Anderson with his lithe physique, smart hairdo and bustling run-up - if much more upright at he point of delivery - concedes four runs off the over, three of which come off the bat of new man Eoin Morgan.
