England are doing this so easily, they can afford to have an over without a four. Even the crowd think it easy enough to relax. Some bloke can be seen walking through the seating with a big bag of what I can only assume is his weekly shop.

100 partnership is up as Root takes a double. Imad Wasim, who earlier batted like a mix of Ganguly and Cook, is bowling left-arm spin with an action like Yuvraj Singh with an extra couple of arm twirls before the release. Morgan anticipates it all and uses the crease really well get a four. Hasan Ali picks up a niggle trying to stop the boundary and needs some treatment on the edge of the rope.

Bryony Lever: Why is everyone in raptures about how great Morgan is? I mean, the guy has a great accent but this is his first 50 in 13 innings.

Morgan may look calmer on the outside as Vic suggests, but I feel there's an old dasher (no relation to me) inside that wants to go at it with every ball. As if to prove this, he's tried to step down the track a few times this over to Amir. Morgan is forced to hold back, but I won't be surprised if he starts slogging a few. The shadows lengthen at Lord's as this partnership reaches 99.

When Morgan first started in this England team he would be the man who would tear an attack apart. Now he's the cement in the middle, the old head who knows how to pace the innings.

There's a horn blowing somewhere in the Lord's stands. My guess is it's a spectator who's snuck an instrument in, but at the moment it sounds like an elephant that's waking up the morning after one too many daiquiris. Morgan takes little notice of the frivolities to reverse sweep Yasir Shah for four.

Mark: Credit to England for sticking by their man Hales so far, but there must come a time when its best for all to leave him out.

Russell Anderson: Moeen to open and get Bairstow in the team. Hales has had his chance in all forms now. Time to move on.

For all his running mishaps, Morgan reaches a well-earned half-century by cutting Amir to the third-man area. And he raises his bat, followed by some adjustment of the helmet strap. There's a better celebration at the end of the over as Amir strays very much down leg side and Morgan gets some bat on it to take four down fine-leg. Excellent over for England.

Cheers Justin. England cruising as comfortably as a man who's just been paid, driving off to spend the day at the beach with nothing but a turtle carrying drinks to the deckchair. Amir has a loud appeal for lbw on Root. Umpire not interested. No review.

  11. Eng 120-2published at 25 overs

    Root 55, Morgan 49

Yasir, bounding in like a new-born lamb, hasn't found much turn today (during the whole summer, come to think of it). Wonderful from Morgan, who has played that pre-meditated paddle sweep to perfection today. It bring him a couple to take him to 49. A first half-century in 13 ODI innings is within spitting distance. With England needing 132 off 25 overs, I'll hand you back to Bibhash Dash.

Pakistan are taking Alec Stewart's advice: Mohammad Amir, their premier fast bowler, is back into the attack, with a wide-ish slip in situ and three men saving one on the off side. Movement back into Morgan, a half-hearted appeal for lbw as the left-hander inside-edges on to his thigh. It's a start, at least - as close as Pakistan have come in the last few overs. Four singles off that set.

We have a delay. Eoin Morgan has a problem with his right eye, the physio brings out a new one... and Morgan drops it as he tries to put it in. Just give it a wipe on your trousers - it'll be fine. Let's get back to some cricket.

Pakistan are almost playing cricket in the 90s or early 2000s. I'm disappointed. I don't understand what they are doing. They're not going to restrict England to under 252 in 50 overs. The only way they'll win is by taking wickets.

  16. Eng 111-2published at 23 overs

    Root 52, Morgan 44

Morgan, so hunched over in his stance that his legs are almost at 90 degrees to his body, has scrambled his way to some sort of form. He's all deft flicks and resourceful cuts today, paddling Yasir to short fine-leg before driving through long-off for singles before providing the exclamation mark at the end of the over with a meaty sweep. Productive over for England - nine off it.

Root, Kohli and AB de Villiers all play in a pretty classical way. It's low-risk cricket but it brings lots of reward.

Malik, sporting designer stubble that wouldn't look out of place in GQ magazine, is tidy enough, but Pakistan need more than tidy at the moment. Runs coming easily to Root, who brings up his fifty off 56 balls, before Morgan bunts a long hop past a diving deep mid-wicket for four.

Morgan realised he'd messed up. He would have been out by a distance. His judgement in these two ODIs has been pretty ordinary. He's playing nice enough, but running between the wickets is also important.

Almost another run-out! Even the dive wouldn't have saved Morgan there had the throw been more accurate - the captain almost paying the ultimate price for trying to pinch a single to square-leg. England are doing their best to make this interesting...
