Edmund Gtaham: Batting in PE lesson, hit ball pretty much straight at a close fielder who took it two handed... ball promptly popped back out.

Adam: Played for Morris Motors 2nd XI. I was a nightmare in the field, i dropped catches. Bowled left arm spin. Nicknamed 'Tuffers'.

Another challenge for Hales - the left-arm spin of Mohammad Nawaz. He and Root do a decent job of working him around until the final ball when the latter gets a small leading edge that falls short of the fielder at cover. Just a small warning to be vigilant.

On a flat deck like this, with somone like Hales, you just need to frustrate him. He's hit the ball a couple of times to the fielders now. It's all about being patient.

  4. Eng 62-1published at 9 overs

Wahab Riaz - cunning like a fox - will provide a challenge to Hales. The Pakistan seamer nags away outside off, looking to frustrate the England opener, who finally gets away with a slicing shot down to third man.

Hales has the last word, stooping to slap a very wide ball through extra cover for four.

Adam Wheeler: The wicket looks a treat at Trent Bridge. Rapid outfield. If England don't get 300 plus, they will be gutted.

  6. Eng 56-1published at 8 overs

Hales is enjoying some home comfort here. He looks relaxed and confident. Lord knows, he needs a score.

That wasn't perfectly timed from Hales but it went a mile in the air. Hales gave himself some room and slogged it, really. That's a brilliant shot.

Root makes everything look effortless. The first four of his innings is a glorious back-foot drive, which he follows up with a little push through leg for three (from what is a no ball, called by the third umpire - modern technology).

The word "free hit" are music to Hales' ears. He swings a huge ball into the stand behind Hassan for the innings' first six.

  9. Eng 41-1published at 7 overs

Hales still has he issues outside off stump. Amir bowls a slower ball a bit wider and prompts a wafty, nothing drive from the England opener, who is fortunate not to get a nick on it.

He makes up for it last ball with a crunching drive that is stopped well by the man at cover.

Here's another look at that poor excuse for a long barrier:

In comes Joe Root, who gets off the mark with a typically neat and tidy back-foot push in to the off side. Hales then takes over with a confident whip through midwicket for four. He's looking confident is Alex.

It must have hit his glove. He took the glove off quite quickly as he set off for the pavilion. It was a brave piece of bowling as fine leg was up, so you're not really expecting the bouncer as it could cost you four - but he was surprised by the bouncer.

Jason Roy is furious with himself. He tries to pull another short ball from Hasan and somehow manages to glove a looping catch behind to keeper Sarfraz Ahmed. The way England had started there was a big score in the offing and he knows it.

Amir is having a conspiratorial smile with a fellow fast bowler, a sort of 'what can you do?' look. It could be one of those days for Pakistan.

  15. Eng 32-0published at 5 overs

Man is up at short fine leg. Mohammad Amir does him no favours with a short ball that Roy pulls past him for another four. Didn't come out of the meat. Didn't have to. I think Amir might spontaneously combust soon.

PitchedOutsideLeg: Pitch may well be as 'flat as The Wicked Witch of the West'. But I reckon the Munchkins would field better than Pakistan so far.

Sam James: My Worcestershire league 2nd team wouldn't have made the sort of errors Pakistan have in the first part of this match. Shameful.

Nice. Wicked Witch of the East was the flat one, though. Damn Dorothy and her flying house. Wicked Witch of the West was the one who melted with water. It's best she's not fielding at mid-off on this "swamp" then.

The boundaries continue to flow. Alex Hales fills his boots with a book-foot square drive.

The Pakistan players seems to be a bit miffed about the dampness of the outfield, citing this as the reason for their shambolic fielding.

Trent Bridge has been the fastest scoring ground in world cricket in the last two years. Runs have been scored at 7.1 per over at the last eight matches here.

  19. Eng 18-0published at 3 overs

What Pakistan need right now is for the captain to lead by example. He moves round at mid-off to stop a Hales push and slips and slides before finally sticking his hands out to just stop the ball. There you go lads, that's how it's done. Ahem.

A few balls later he ruins all his "good" work by diving over a straight drive, which runs away to the rope. On this evidence, England could get 450.

Mohammad Amir is chuntering away like Muttley all the way back to the boundary.
