    run-rate 4.41

Jason Roy - J-Roy to his mates - is having a little joke with his team-mates which ends with a shimmy of the shoulder. Another quiet over, with four singles coming from it.

The drinks are now brought on - Pakistan's are being carried by a weary-looking Wahab Riaz and a cold-looking Mohammad Amir, complete with blanket around his torso.

I remember at the Ageas Bowl last year, England were bowled out inside 50 overs. They were just playing shots. And Eoin Morgan said after the game: "No, that's the way we want to play. We're trying to change the culture of England cricket." Batting out the 50 overs is the old-fashioned way.

Steady stuff from Ben Stokes, just two singles coming from the over. At 6.09, Stokes has the worst career economy rate of all England's bowlers. Moeen Ali has the best at 5.01.

That was a gorgeous drive. The balance was complete, it was a nice punch down the ground and Azhar Ali was perfectly positioned. Maybe it is his day.

    Plunkett 2-0-14-1

Who's Pakistan's Boom Boom these days? Sarfraz?

Skipper Azhar Ali seems set in his orthodox style of play and he tickles Liam Plunkett for a rare boundary. And another one, when he punches it back past the bowler and to the rope.

That's how you do it, Sami.

Stokes makes difficult catches look simple. He gets under it. He makes sure he's very still. He's got a really safe pair of hands. It wasn't a great innings from Sami Aslam. He's chewed up a lot of balls for not a great return.

    Sami c Stokes b Plunkett 24 (Pak 61-2)

Sami Aslam's laborious, painful 44-ball knock comes to an end when he miscues one from Liam Plunkett and the ball flies high into the leg side where Ben Stokes jogs in from the deep square boundary edge, steadies himself and then takes a very composed catch.

500 is possible. It would have to be somewhere like Bangalore or the Wanderers. We've seen big scores regularly there. It would be an incredible effort.

    Sami 24 off 42 balls

If ever there was a spark to get Ben Stokes' pace up, it's being guided for four through gully and then being called for two wides - one of which was marginal to say the least. The Durham all-rounder isn't too happy about it. At least it's thrown a hint of spice into a far from bubbling pot.

JR: Don't get too carried away. Remember that as well as the capacity to score shed-loads of runs, England have the ability to collapse spectacularly!

Fawad, Liverpool: The way Pakistan are batting in one-day matches from the last few games you can tell why they are good in Test ranking.

  11. Pak 52-1published at 13 overs

The cameras pan to the England think-tank of Paul Farbrace, Trevor Bayliss and Graham Thorpe as Farby gestures to a fielder to throw the ball in on the bounce. This is so England can scuff it up a little and find some reverse swing in the later overs.

Liam Plunkett, by the way, is into the bowling attack now. Burlier than a nightclub bouncer and with plenty of pace, he presents a new challenge to the batsmen who belatedly bring up the team fifty.

Ben Stokes is given a chuck. Still recovering from injury, he looks like he's got another couple of gears but he's instead using his skills to bring the ball back into the right-handed Azhar Ali's pads. This time the ball was going down leg, but a warning for the Pakistan skipper nonetheless.

In the last four ODIs at this ground, teams batting first have scored between 290-310. The last time Pakistan came here they scored 294-8 in 2010. Last year Australia scored 299-7.

Pakistan are dealing in singles at the moment. Like turning up at Harrods with a purse full of coupons and coins. It just won't cut it in the high-rolling world of elite ODI cricket.

I'm told that the coin at the toss has the letters 'H' and 'T' either side. Just so there's no doubt.

  17. Pak 40-1published at 10 overs

Sami Aslam can barely get bat on ball to Chris Jordan, who is winning his 30th ODI cap today. CJ's bowling average is telling - it's 87 in six matches this year, compared to low thirties in the previous two calendar years.

Pakistan reach 40-1 in 10 overs. To put into context how poor that is, England's dreadful 2015 World Cup team regularly reached 60-1 inside 10.

This is the perfect scenario England have found themselves in. They're not bowling many freebies. Batsmen aren't going very positively either.

  19. Pak 36-1published at 9 overs

England coach Trevor Bayliss is having a chinwag with assistant Paul Farbrace on the dressing room balcony. "Shame we didn't bat first today, Farbs. I fancied us for 480." "Minimum, Trev. Minimum." Five singles off that Willey over. He's gone for nine off his last two but still has splendid figures of 0-11 off five.

England don't get hit for 300-plus that often. Look at England's batting power. Pakistan will have to get 10% above par rather than just get to par, which won't win it against England.
