"Hampshire have made a breakthrough after lunch with that recent wicket of Arun Harinath, but would you believe it, the players are off for bad light all of a sudden.

"A few boos, shouts of 'rubbish' and slow hand claps from the crowd as the players trudge off.

"Can't say I blame them, let's get the game on."

Can Azharullah get a hat-trick after the wickets of Sam Northeast and Darren Stevens?

  4. Off for bad lightpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Surrey 97-3 v Hampshire

It's gloomy at The Oval. No, not just the lack of runs, but the skies are overcast and they have come off for bad light. If it's dark now, I wonder how it will be as the day goes on...

  5. wicket

WICKET McKay (c Wiese b Magoffin) 0published at 13:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Leicestershire 100-7 v Sussex

That slump continues as Clint McKay is caught at first slip off Steve Magoffin. That's Magoffin's fourth wicket of the day so far. Could he have a five-fer for the third time this season?

  6. wicket

WICKET Harinath (c Wheal b McClaren) 9published at 13:35 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Surrey 96-3 v Hampshire

Ryan McLaren takes the wicket of Arun Harinath at The Oval as Hampshire do exactly as Kevan James said they should earlier: take wickets at a reasonable pace.

Meanwhile, Leicestershire have slumped to 100-6 against Sussex. Neil Dexter made a half century, but apart from that, it's been pretty poor from the Foxes batsmen.

Somerset 95 all out v Warwickshire

    Stuart BroadImage source, Rex Features

One more thing from Taunton today.

We understand it to be the first instance of a side being bowled out before lunch since Stuart Broad took 8-15 in bowling out the Aussies for 60 at Trent Bridge on 6 August 2015

The Bears did it the first ball of the 31st over, having taken the extra time before lunch. The Aussies that day in Nottingham lasted just 18.3 overs

And the one common denominator? Bears captain Ian Bell was on the pitch for both.

Not only that, he took a catch in both, rather spookily, in each case, the number four!

Interesting use of the word 'creams' from the Nottinghamshire Twitter account. I prefer wallop.

  9. Pettini gonepublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Leicestershire 90-4 v Sussex

The first wicket of the afternoon session has fallen at Grace Road, with Mark Pettini bowled by Jofra Archer.

A win for Sussex basically totally ends Leicestershire's chance of winning promotion to Division One. However, compared to the previous couple of years, I think the Foxes will be pretty happy with how things have gone.

  10. How we looking?published at 13:17 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

So how do things stand after that morning session?

Well Yorkshire and Middlesex both look to be in relatively decent positions in their respective games against Durham and Notts as they challenge for the the division One title.

For Notts, they could be relegated this week if things don't go their way.

Meanwhile at the top of Division Two, Kent lost Joe Denly just before lunch to leave them 66-2 against Northants. With leaders Essex not playing this round, Kent need to win to keep up the pressure.

Is it me, or does that tweet make things sound ominous at The Oval?

  13. 'Batting far from straightforward'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Surrey 93-2 v Hampshire

BBC Radio London's Mark Church at The Oval:

"A hard fought morning of cricket…batting has been far from straightforward and the Hampshire bowlers have gone past the edge on numerous occasions.

"Dominic Sibley fell for 11 off Gareth Berg courtesy of a brilliant one handed catch from Lewis McManus and Gareth Andrew took the big wicket of Kumar Sangakkara for 26.

"Rory Burns has got his head down and played very well for his 37 not out as Surrey went to lunch on 93-2."

  14. wicket

WICKET Leach (b Patel) 14published at 12:53 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

Somerset 95 all out v Warwickshire

Jeetan Patel finishes off Somerset's innings, taking the wicket of Jack Leach. Leach was one of only four batsman to have made it into double figures.

That's Somerset's ninth-lowest ever total against Warwickshire, for you stats fans.

Time for some lunch. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that Somerset dressing room.

  15. 'Must-win for Kent'published at 12:52 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Kent 66-2 v Northants

    BBC Radio Kent's Peter Guise:

"Having batted patiently to see off the new ball on the opening morning of a game they simply must win against Northants to keep their title hopes alive, Kent succumbed losing two wickets before the luncheon interval to nicks behind.

"The second of those a wayward attempted pull by Denly off the penultimate delivery.

"As a consequence they must rebuild in the afternoon session led by Sean Dickson who will lunch well on 41 not out."

  16. 'It's the right time'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Nottinghamshire 74-3 v Middlesex

    Peter MooresImage source, Getty Images

In case you missed it earlier, Peter Moores has been named as the new head coach of Nottinghamshire.

Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire director of coaching, has been on 5live sports extra during the lunch break.

He said: "We feel this is the right time. We've been struggling at the bottom of the division.

"Chances are we're going to get relegated, we're trying very hard to avoid that, but we want to make it clear to the supporters and members before the last home match of the season that we have a clear plan in place that if we do get relegated as to how we believe the best way to come back is."

  17. Selman defies Gloucestershire seamerspublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Glamorgan 130-3 v Gloucestershire

BBC Wales's Nick Webb in Cardiff:

"Glamorgan's young opener Nick Selman led the way with an accomplished knock of 74 not out after a streaky start, with wickets falling at the other end.

"David Payne, Josh Shaw and Matt Taylor all claimed wickets in early spells to leave Glamorgan 72-3 after Gareth Roderick put the home side in.

"But Aneurin Donald opened up with a blitz of boundaries as the 50 stand came up within six overs, and Donald moved to within seven runs of 1,000 in first-class cricket.

"Glamorgan are being led by Michael Hogan for the first time, with Jacques Rudolph missing because of a neck problem."

  18. 'Tough for Leicestershire'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Leicestershire 90-3 v Sussex

    BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms:

"A tough morning for Leicestershire after Sussex decided to bowl first under cloudy skies and a greenish looking pitch, which has made for favourable bowling conditions

"Steve Magoffin took a wicket with the first ball of the match having Paul Horton caught behind, but thereafter the Sussex bowling failed to exploit the conditions as Dexter and Robson completed a solid 50 partnership.

"However, Robson was bowled by one that kept horribly low, and the ever-reliable Magoffin trapped Leics skipper Cosgrove for four.

"Neil Dexter has shown sound technique, mixing watchful defence with some classic cover drives, and he may well benefit if the forecast sun arrives and batting gets easier."

  19. Lunchpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    A breather. Phew!

We're all headed for lunch now and my goodness hasn't it been a busy old morning in the County Championship today?

Well, lunch everywhere apart from Taunton, where there'll be an extended morning session as Warwickshire look to get out the last-wicket pairing of Tim Groenewald and Jack Leach.

    Yorkshire 106-1 v Durham

With the chaos going off everywhere else, Yorkshire are quietly building towards a rather nice total with Alex Lees and Gary Ballance bringing up their 100-run partnership.
