Some breaking news to bring you from the County Championship - former England head coach Peter Moores has been named as Nottinghamshire's head coach in a newly-created role.

Moores has been employed as Coaching Consultant at Trent Bridge since July 2015 and comes in amid a disappointing season for Notts, who could be relegated this week.

The 53-year-old will take over on 1 October.

  3. Watchful start from Surreypublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Surrey 16-0 v Hampshire

    Adam Williams
    BBC Sport at The Oval

"No toss required on day one of this Division One contest at The Oval.

"Hampshire skipper James Vince decided he wanted to try and exploit the overhead conditions plus a sticky and humid feel in the air.

"His side are desperate for the points in their closing two games to haul themselves out of the bottom two and away from danger. It's a 14-point deficit to their nearest neighbours Durham, but they've played a game more.

"For third-placed Surrey, they can still mathematically come up on the outside and win the title. But, a first season back in the top tier has been a roaring success whatever happens from here."

  4. Huge partnership...published at 10:55 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Surrey 16-0 v Hampshire

The only Division One match where there hasn't been a wicket so far is Surrey against Hampshire at the Oval.

Dominic Sibley and Rory Burns are forming a formidable opening partnership in contrast to the others from today - making 16 runs.

  5. wicket

WICKET Rogers (c Clarke b Barker) 1published at 10:49 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Somerset 8-2 v Warwickshire

Wickets are absolutely tumbling everywhere this morning and Warwickshire have made a stonking start at Taunton.

Chris Rogers has been suggesting he might retire at the end of the season and Warwickshire seamer Keith Barker is doing all he can to make the former Australia Test batsman's mind up for him.

Rogers edges to second slip and Somerset are on the proverbial ropes.

  6. wicket

WICKET Lyth (c Jennings b Onions) 2published at 10:45 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Yorkshire 5-1 v Durham

Graham Onions scored his first-ever Championship half century at the 204th attempt in the last round of matches, and has taken that form into his bowling with the wicket of Yorkshire's Adam Lyth.

Onions has a lot to think his Durham team-mate Keaton Jennings for after taking a great catch at gully.

It's County Championship action on a Tuesday which means just one thing - Team News Tuesday.

With that in mind and the US Open currently in full swing, pardon the pun, we want to know your American Cricket XI.

  8. wicket

WICKET Libby (c Robson b Murtagh) 5published at 10:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Nottinghamshire 11-1 v Middlesex

Vitally important wicket at both ends of the Division One table.

Nottinghamshire have not won at Trent Bridge since they beat Surrey at the start of the season, and have not made the best of starts versus the leaders.

Jake Libby edges Tim Murtagh to Sam Robson at first slip and Middlesex are keeping the pressure up on title challengers Yorkshire.

  9. wicket

WICKET Trescothick (lbw Wright) 2published at 10:38 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Somerset 7-1 v Warwickshire

    Marcus TrescothickImage source, Rex Features

Somerset's veteran opener Marcus Trescothick signed a new one-year contrast last week, but the 40-year-old former England man is out after facing just six balls against Warwickshire.

Chris Wright is the man to had got the wicket, finding Trescothick leg before for two.

  10. Selman living dangerouslypublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Glamorgan 8-0 v Gloucestershire

We're only an over into the match, but Glamorgan opener Nick Selman has been living life on the edge, quite literally, with two boundaries and a big missed catching opportunity.

  11. wicket

WICKET Horton (c Brown b Magoffin) 0published at 10:31 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Leicestershire 0-1 Sussex

I was about to put in a nice little entry saying we're under way everywhere, but Steve Magoffin has only gone and gazumped me by taking a wicket with the first ball of the day.

The Sussex seam bowler is edged behind by Leicestershire opener Paul Horton and we have a proper game on our hands already.

Warm, humid and a little overcast in some places.

  14. Full fixture listpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

Want a full run down of the fixtures? Well here you go.

Middlesex, who as we heard earlier could relegate Notts, and Yorkshire are only separated by four points at the top of Division One going into this round of fixtures.

    Division One

    Nottinghamshire v Middlesex

    Somerset v Warwickshire

    Surrey v Hampshire

    Yorkshire v Durham

    Division Two

    Glamorgan v Gloucestershire

    Kent v Northamptonshire

    Leicestershire v Sussex

  15. And in Division Two...published at 10:21 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    EssexImage source, Rex Features

In Division Two, it is almost certain that the single promotion spot will go to Essex or Kent.

Yes, Sussex, Leicestershire and Gloucestershire can surpass Essex’s current total of 219 points, but that would depend on them taking a maximum of 24 points from each remaining game and hoping Essex don’t get more than a handful from theirs.

The most points Kent can take this season is 243 – that means Essex need 25 points from their two remaining games to guarantee promotion. They currently have 219 points and are not playing this week.

If Kent do not beat Northants this week, the maximum number of points they can get is 232 (assuming they get maximum bonus points in a draw), so Essex could then win the title next week if they beat Glamorgan.

Should Kent lose this week, the maximum number of points they could get would be 227 (or fewer - depending on this week’s bonus points).

  16. Permutations...published at 10:19 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

    Notts v Middlesex (10:30 BST)

    NottsImage source, Rex Features

Notts could be relegated if they fail to beat Middlesex at Trent Bridge. With two games to go, Notts can only achieve a maximum of 165 points.

If they only draw against Middlesex, taking 13 points or fewer, the maximum number of points they could achieve this season is 154. That would mean Durham only need to take five points from their game to send Notts down.

However, it’s possible Notts could take fewer points than 13 for a draw, in which case the number needed by Durham would come down accordingly.

Should Notts lose against Middlesex, they are definitely down.

The summer is officially drawing to a close.

The weather has started turning, the kids are going back to school and the cricket season is almost over.

I hear your collective grumbles, but don't worry, we have seven County Championship matches today as we embark on the penultimate round of fixtures for some teams.

    So what could happen today?
