Summary

  • Debutant Mehedi, 18, takes five wickets

  • Moeen top-scorer with 68 off 170 balls

  • Bairstow makes battling half-century

  • Pitch turns sharply on day one

  1. Eng 187-5published at 66 overs

Mehedi continues to ask questions. He rips one past the dangled defence of Moeen, who flicks a subsequent ball to mid-wicket for the over's only run.

I would move the target now from 250 to 300. If these two continue 300 gets them back in the game.

  3. Eng 186-5published at 65 overs

Shafiul tries to sucker Moeen with a short ball that the England man fails to properly connect with but watches with relief as the ball drops safe on the leg side. There's no catching out Bairstow, who finds another boundary with a soft-handed steer down through wide third man.

  4. Eng 181-5published at 64 overs

Bairstow strikes back. He rocks back, positions himself well and back-foot drives for four. Review that!

  5. Not outpublished at 63.5 overs

It did not carry off a boot or pad. Bairstow hit the ball straight into the ground.

  6. Umpire reviewpublished at 63.5 overs

    Eng 177-5

Having had some much-needed rest during tea, Bangladesh's teenage star Mehedi is handed responsibility with the ball again. He prompts more work from the video umpire as Bairstow sweeps and leg slip catches. Did it carry straight off a boot or pad?

I can't help feeling England are using this series as a warm-up for India. If so, surely we'll need another batter in that top order to take on Ashwin & co.

  8. Eng 177-5published at 63 overs

    Bairstow 27, Moeen 62

Shafiul bowled just four overs of seam prior to tea, but he is entrusted with the first over of the final session. It is a mixed bag, with one ball that nips away down leg, strikes Mushfiqur's left hand, causing a grimace of pain from the keeper, and runs away for two byes. Nothing to concern England.

Amen, Tom. The tea interval is over, the players are back out. One final session coming your way...

Will England open the bowling with a spinner? I don't - I think we'll go with Broad and Woakes. But that's what Bangladesh have done well.

Thanks Jamie. Well, things are looking a lot better than they were when we last spoke. Moeen and Jonny have steered England away from the rocks. Question is, can they now push on and give the likes of Batty and Rashid a platform from which to attack?

Come on Blue, Moeen has got 61! But on that hopeful note, it's time to hand over to Phil Dawkes to describe the final session.

Bangladesh haven't played Test cricket for 14 months, and it's almost as if they were out of practice on what's a good review and what isn't. Their captain Mushfiqur has a lot on his plate behind the stumps and his side haven't reviewed very well.

Random fact for you - Ben Duckett's Dad, Graeme, and Lydia Greenway's Dad, Martin, used to play 1st XI club cricket together at Hayes (Kent) CC in the early 90s. They must breed quality left handers round that way...

England will be very happy with this. They had clawed their way back into it at lunch, and then they lost Root and Stokes quickly. At that stage, Moeen was struggling but he's survived all of these reviews and 30-odd runs ago, he popped the best bowler (Mehedi) over mid-on for six and he's played some fine shots since. It's as though everything has clicked for him.

It's the first time England have fielded a team with 11 first-class century-makers in it since 1992, when Phillip DeFreitas was number 11 against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

There's another one, Aggers, Shakib sending down the 16th of the innings, and that will be tea. A 34-over session in which England have scored 92 runs for the loss of two wickets. An intriguing final session ahead.

We're having a sweepstake on how many maidens will be bowled between now and Christmas in Tests involving England. I've gone for 750 and Andrew Samson has the lowest with 619. Ebony is being cagey and hasn't made her selection yet. She's got to have it in by the close of play today.
