Maiden from Taijul, the first of the innings. Good from Duckett though, he doesn't get frustrated. This is already his highest Test match score.

What I like about that sweep shot is how Duckett checked it at the end, which shows control.

    Cook 12 Duckett 26

Great stuff from Ben Duckett. Mehedi over pitches and the Englishman slog sweeps him for four. There is no fielder out there, no danger at all. And again! Along the ground this time but four more. Sensible stuff third ball from Duckett. He just knocks the ball out for a single. Mehedi then beats Cook with an absolute ripper, pitching leg and beating the outside edge. No luck for the hosts though, Cook is still there.

I would look at the way Bangladesh approached their fourth innings in Chittagong. There was no change. But if you're Ben Duckett, and you've struggled so far, to come in and do that on pitches that are turning is a very alien thing to do.

    Target 273

Just the one over for Hom as Taijul Islam is brought into the attack. Jonny Bairstow heads back to the dressing after a net. The Yorkshireman let 16 byes through this morning – none his fault I hasten to add – but how is this for a suggestion? In India, if England do choose to bring in Jos Buttler as a batsman, he and Bairstow rotate the duties with the gloves, session by session, reducing the load on one of England’s most important batters. What do you reckon?

Four singles off the over. Say it quietly but this has been a good start from England.

    England need 244 to win

This is now England's best opening partnership of the series. A good time for it too, they need more though to calm the nerves in the dressing room and quieten the crowd. No alarms in that over, much calmer, but this is tense stuff.

Richard Sharp: Anybody want to tell me the point of picking Finn for this Test, or indeed any?

Martin Putnam: Two and a bit days remain - get Geoffrey on the batting coaching team pronto....... dig deep and no risks.

Andrew Pitt: If we win this then we've played well. If BAN win then they've played very well. It's been another great Test match. 5days 4eva.

  9. Eng 27-0published at 6 overs

Early change from Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur as he replaces Shakib with Shuvagata Hom. The off-spinner only bowled four overs in the first innings. Look away now England fans. Hom bowls outside the off-stump and the ball scuttles along the ground, no bounce at all. The good news is the ball has nutmegged the 'keeper behind the stumps for four byes.

If Sri Lanka and Australia had played each other on these two pitches with Murali and Warne in their pomp we could have seen the first ever one day Tests. Somewhat of a reflection on the spinners playing in this series.

Duckett gets away with one. He goes back, cuts and the ball goes quickly to Mahmudullah at slip but it bursts through the fielder's hands.

That's not a bad strategy because it puts the bowler off line. If the batsmen are willing to play shots and get boundaries it puts doubt in the bowler's mind.

Left arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan is the bowler at the other end. Ben Duckett is not going to die wondering here. Twice in a row he gets out the big back-lift and reverse sweeps Shakib for four. Good positive cricket from the youngster. He quickly moves to 12 not out.

    England need 266 to win

News has reached the Dhaka locals that their team could record a famous victory today. The ground is filling up nicely. Duckett plays and misses at another big turner from Mehedi but gets away with it. Luck is needed on this wicket.

Tim Griffiths: England looking good at 0-0. But as Geoffrey says add 2 wickets to the score!

Dret: The runs scored have gone up in each innings. We therefore looked nailed on to win this. Honest.

Rachel: A tough ask, yes, but with batsmen of the calibre of Cook and Root this is definitely possible. Go for it lads!

Duckett launches a sweep shot straight into the short-leg fielder's backside. Mominul is the man in there and he'll have a nasty bruise tomorrow. A few sympathetic pats on the back from his team-mates. Duckett is off the mark a couple of balls later.

Bangladesh have to bowl well and take wickets with the new ball. As soon as the ball gets older, it gets easy.

Good start from Cook as he picks up two from the first ball of the innings. England need their captain today, big time. If they didn't know the difficulty of the challenge facing them, they do now. Mehedi's fifth ball spins and bounces a mile and the wicket-keeper takes the ball at shoulder height. Cook survies though.
