Eng 207-3
I think this is close. Umesh Yadav to Joe Root. Inswing. Root walking across. Missing leg, or hitting the timber?
Moeen one short of century after sparkling knock
Root (124) caught and bowled by a juggling Yadav
Assured Hameed makes 31, Duckett out for 13

We're round about the 60 over mark so we look for reverse swing. We haven't seen anything yet but we have glimpsed the ball and it has got old very quickly.
Just turning on? Where have you been? England won a potentially crucial toss and gobbled up the chance to bat first. Haseeb Hameed looked organised for his 31, but was one three wickets to fall before lunch. Since then, though, Joe Root and Moeen Ali have added 105 for the fourth wicket.

This is the first time England have got a century partnership for either the third or fourth wicket all year.
Root 92, Moeen 47
Interesting. R Ashwin is recalled and is immediately lofted over mid-on for four by Moeen Ali. If England get after Ashwin and India are without Shami, their options would narrow rapidly. Ashwin wears a stern look, then dishes out a word to a fielder that fails to prevent a single. Did anyone think today would turn out like this?

Come on Root - bring up your hundred before the school run please!

Root 91, Moeen 41
Yadav, suncream smeared on his cheeks, manfully picks up the slack, keeping Joe Root honest on the off stump. The tall pacer has cranked it up to 88mph and looks to be getting a hint of reverse. Root survives an inside edge on to his front pad. India pose a threat for the first time in living memory.

India will be thankful they have selected five bowlers which they haven't done recently. Shami had looked impressive and bowled briskly with the new ball. He might not bowl briskly again for a while.
Shami is going off. Virat Kohli looks absolutely gutted. Umesh Yadav is hit with the stark realisation that he is the only pacer on the park and is thrown the ball. R Ashwin's finger starts to throb. Everyone's workload has just gone up a notch.

A bit chastening going off after one ball.
Now then, is India's afternoon about to get worse? Mohammed Shami is recalled, bowls one delivery, then goes down like a sack of spuds. He's holding his hammy. On comes the physio. He's in mither, the paceman.

So far, of the three spinners, Ashwin has looked the most dangerous. Now a measure of how well these two have played is that they have taken spin off at this end.
Kohli is holding crisis meeting after crisis meeting. The bowler is consulted at the beginning of each over, the mouth shielded from any pesky lip-reader. Mishra with a slip and leg slip, bowling towards a media centre copied exactly on the one at Lord's. Root creeps into the 90s. The few India fans in attendance are looking hacked as Hilary Clinton supporters. Topical.

Steve trow: Root and Mo digging us out of a hole here
Antony Phillipson: Wisely, and slow, they stumble that run fast...sound advice from #Shakespeare, external as Root and Moeen rebuild
Jonathon Horrocks: Impressed by India's over rate. Other teams take note. It can be done, even in hot conditions
Root 89, Moeen 40
There's very little pressure on this England pair. In the Rajkot sun, India are neither posing a threat or containing the scoring. In terms of working the ball around, Joe Root has the freedom of the city. Moeen is also causing Kohli to scowl, paddling a sweep off Jadeja for four. There's just over 20 minutes to go until tea.
Partnership 89
Amit Mishra is almost bowling the full toss as a stock delivery - failing to use the facilities on offer. Joe Root has pounced on every gift offered, this time sweeping in front of square for his ninth boundary. Remember how we talked about his blink-of-an-eye scoring? He's up to 88 now. He should be at three figures before tea.
Have you picked your all-time best England Test captain yet? Here's the selection of former England batsman James Taylor. He rated Vaughan as the best he's seen, because of the 2005 Ashes winner's ability to handle the big names and mould them into a winning team.

Root 80, Moeen 35
These are the moments that can stall England's momentum. Man moved from short fine leg, Moeen tries to find the gap. The sweep isn't quite right and he can only glove the ball over the wicketkeeper. Patience Mo. Bat long, wickets can fall in clusters, etc etc.
Still Mishra, the leggie looking as threatening as his belly double Winnie the Pooh. India begging for a mistake, Root almost giving them one with a push at a leg-break that turns. Silly point is removed, Root sweeps, Kohli is left with his hands on his hips. Not a happy home camp.

Watching Root bring up his 50 from the Channel Tunnel. I can get 4G down here but not at my house in Surrey!
