Moeen is on the move again, sashaying down the track to thump Ashwin through the leg side for four more and recording the 150 partnership from 257 balls. Root unveils the reverse sweep and plays it expertly to collect his 10th four. To say the bowler looks unimpressed would be an understatement.

  3. Eng 250-3published at 75 overs

Moeen advances and plays the ball back to bowler Jadeja, no stranger to an aggressive response. There is a hint of a shy at the stumps but he decides against as the batsman was back in his crease. A maiden, only the second for the slow left-armer in his 19 overs.

That's a very good shot, Moeen hasn't been afraid to play a lofted shot off Ashwin who is not used to this. The batters are showing the temerity to go down the pitch and loft him - no wonder he's upset.

    Root 111, Moeen 70

An impudent thump from Moeen to a well-pitched delivery from Ashwin sails over wide mid-on for the left-hander's sixth boundary. A young boy is waiting to collect and he is fortunate that these padded ropes don't flick the ball up comedically like they used to in England. The 250 up.

A flick off the hip from Moeen as Jaedja drops short, plus some more positive running between the wickets, brings another two runs to the total. Serene progress for England.

An appeal from Ashwin as Moeen is struck on the pad having advanced down the wicket but umpire Gaffaney is not impressed and there is no review.

The first maximum of the match. Lovely dancing feet from Root, like a young Anton du Beke, a beautifully timed stroke down the ground and a magnificent follow through to Jadeja. The ball flies majestically into the boards beyond the rope.

  10. Eng 231-3published at 70 overs

Accurate stuff from Ashwin but Root ensures the scoreboard ticks over with a single and Moeen plays out the remainder of the over calmly. A young Indian boy in a flowery shirt looks on pensively.

The pitch is not doing anything so England have got to make it count. Don't give it away, make a big total.

Well played. That's what England need to make big totals - one of the top batsmen to make 100-plus. You want to get up to 450 at least. If you've got a decent technique and temperament in India, you make runs.

England women have stepped on the accelerator in Colombo, reaching 67-0 after 11 overs as they chase 169 to beat Sri Lanka in the first one-day international in Colombo.

Tammy Beaumont (above) hit four fours in a six-ball spell and has reached 36 with opening partner Lauren Winfield on 27.

Yadav, sun cream expertly applied under the eyes and above and between his beard line, is worked for a single by Root. Shami is going through a workout in the dressing room, presumably on an exercise bike, although that cannot be seen. The seamer then jogs back on to the field at the end of the over.
