The complexion of the game changed because you had lost two early wickets. The first wicket was a proper wicket - Shami bowled Cook a beauty outside off stump. Full credit to the bowler - that was a bowler's wicket. 

After that I thought the youngster Hameed played very tidily, Root came in and played a few shots. The kid was doing his bit and Root has to take the blame for the run-out. He stranded him.

Richie Macca: I am reminded of Geoffrey's old adage - you can't win a Test in a session, but you can certainly lose one.

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace on Ben Duckett, who was bowled for five: "He is working incredibly hard - he has worked at the ball spinning away from him. He's got to make those adjustments. The best players are those whop make those changes.

"In these conditions, against a quality bowler like Ashwin, it's not easy. We know India are a quality side. They've had the better of conditions here and they've made better use of them."

Ben Duckett came in and he didn't look at ease. He's playing leg-sideish - he's playing Bakerloo and it went down Piccadilly. 

Joe Root... We all make mistakes but he is one of the most mature players in world cricket. He played lovely for 50. Ashwin bowled him a ball that turned and hit his glove; the next ball he tries to him over the top. That was totally immature and unnecessary.

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace on Sky Sports: "We were very pleased with this morning - we showed some good skills with the ball.

"But then we're massively disappointed with this evening. We looked like we got a bit frenetic - we didn't cope very well. We didn't show enough fight. Those are times when we need to show a bit more resilience and get stuck in.

"That's the skill of the batsman - working out how you're going to play. International cricket finds you out quickly. There are times where you've got to adapt your game. If we are going to be successful as a team, we have to cope well in all conditions."

Geoffrey was asked if England can save the game...

No. This game has gone today. I can see India batting again if England hang on a bit. The pitch is going to get wear and tear a bit more. We'll have a bat and then we'll bowl. There are three days left - this could be four days quite easily.

450 from where they where - India might have thought they'd get 500. England would have been reasonably pleased. 

I was saying 'bat well' and don't give them too big a lead, 400 with a 50-lead. I didn't expect them to bat like idiots.

Bairstow and Stokes have dug in well in the last 40 minutes but to say it's advantage India would be understating the situation just at the moment. England will be desperate for this pair to stay together for about six hours. 

India debutant Jayant Yadav, who made 35 and removed Moeen Ali, on Sky Sports: "Since I can remember, all you ever dream of was representing India in Test cricket. It was good that I didn't do anything on the first day so I had time to regroup my thoughts."

On his 64-run stand with Ravichandran Ashwin: "I wasn't doing much of the talking with Ash. He was just saying, 'express yourself - play your natural game.'

Asked whether India have got England where they want them: "Definitely. We're waiting for tomorrow - let's start all over again."

Jayant Yadav has been impressive on debut. A tidy 35 with the bat and then his first Test wicket came when he caught Moeen's pad as he danced down the pitch. It's not turning miles, even if the pitch is starting to break up. It's just been thoroughly uncomfortable viewing from an England point of view. Ben Duckett, in particular, has some serious work to do when it comes to facing off spin.

I don't think this pitch has deteriorated that much yet. The ball has not been jumping and turning it viciously but England have made some mistakes. India have applied the pressure really well.

I reckon every England batsman, bar Alastair Cook, contrived to get themselves out there. Cook was out to a genuinely brilliant bit of fast bowling, but the rest was a mixture of poor technique, bad judgement - Joe Root's shot will stay with me for a while - and bad tactics. Props to India though for sensing weakness in England and exploiting it. Once Root went, ,Virat Kohli made sure that around the bat was jam packed with fielders.

India might have hoped for a few more than 455 although that is not bad at all. At 50-1 England were doing OK but since then the tension has ratcheted up, a few mistakes, some good bowling, one or two players in alien conditions - I'm thinking of Ben Duckett. The screw has effectively been turned.

Ashwin takes the last over of the day, and Bairstow looks a little shaky as he comes on the front foot to defend. That's the definition of a long hop from Ashwin, though, and Bairstow greedily bunts it away to the boundary. A single will round off the day's play.
