They keep replaying Root's wicket. I wish they wouldn't. He completely misjudged the shot, there was never enough power on it to carry it over the ropes. Debutant Jayant Yadav is on for his first bowl. It's a tidy first over for the off-spinner.

Matt Barron: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. England absolutely throwing their wickets away without any thought. Awful.

Ade: Listening to TMS' description of the action and pitch, it seems like a miracle is needed?!

Jack: Good plan by England to be forced to follow on and hence not bat 4th on this pitch. Smart.

That's why you keep your mid-on and mid-off up in these kinds of conditions. Root just slices it. He came inside the ball because he expected it to spin back and it didn't. England are in all sorts here, this could get very messy.

    Root c Umesh Yadav b Ashwin 53 (Eng 79-4)

That's horrible. No two ways around it. Root comes down the pitch, makes a mess of the shot and the ball goes high towards deep mid-off, who snaffles it gratefully. Root can't believe he's done that. Neither can the increasingly grave-looking fans in the stands.

This fifty will feel like it was harder to get to than his hundred in Rajkot.

    50 for Root - Eng 77-3published at 31 overs

Root survives another lbw yell from Jadeja - probably sliding down - before sweeping for a couple of runs and picking up his 24th Test fifty. This one's come from 91 balls and it's been tense going in the last few overs. He meets Moeen in the middle for a fist bump and a spot of gardening.

Moeen is beaten all ends up by Ashwin's arm ball. Just as he's got over that one, the next ball turns square and beats his outside edge by what looks like millimeters. Ashwin's targeting the rough by the batsman's feet, and he's finding it pretty regularly.

I find this absolutely mad - Moeen Ali is the new batter on 0 and you have got a long-on, allowing him to knock the ball down the ground to get off the mark.

Moeen decides he wants to get off the mark with a quick single. Root, having played this game once today, decides he doesn't. He sends him back and Moeen does get off the mark with a shovelled drive through a vacant long-on. I'd have thought Kohli would want a few more around the bat. Just the two slips to Moeen, as it stands.

Dan from Stevenage: England are a poor side when batting second and chasing a big score. Could be an innings defeat.

  12. Eng 72-3published at 28 overs

Duckett's wicket might get worse whenever you see it. Playing completely down the wrong line and Ashwin knew it. He knew he wasn't comfortable and bam, there you go. Moeen, meanwhile, has joined Root at the crease.

The young lad's mind is going to be frazzled now. We saw him pressing down the line of leg stump and that exposed his off stump. He's got a real issue against the off-spinners - England are going to have to iron that out very quickly.

    Duckett b Ashwin 5 (Eng 72-3)

Played, Ashwin. He's had Duckett's measure since he got to the crease. Duckett is so far on his leg stump that all three of his stumps are exposed. The ball pitches on middle, straight past the outside edge and into middle stump. Not great.

It's doing enough that if England lose concentration and lose Joe Root here they could lose quite a few. It's not easy for batsmen coming in.

  16. Eng 72-2published at 27 overs

Turn, bounce, past Root's outstretched bat. That's good from Jadeja, and even better when a quicker ball stays low and comes perilously close to Root's off stump. Root jammed his bat down on that just in time. There's a big shout for lbw but Root's inside edge saves him again. A tricky over just about negotiated.

The biggest compliment India are giving Joe Root is that there is just one fielder around the bat. It's quite remarkable.

Ashwin beats Root with one that drifted away and then turned into him, just beating the outside edge. It flies away for 4 byes. I don't like the look of that. We're probably not at hiding behind the cushion time just yet, but both Ashwin and Jadeja are getting turn and bounce. Root gets off strike and Duckett, playing carefully, lets a bit of leg stump rubbish go sailing past him.

Anthony Forman: Did Root run out Baby Boycott on purpose because he was scoring too slow?

David Massey: What has Root got against this lad? Tells him to review a plumb lbw then runs him out!!

  20. Eng 67-2published at 25 overs

    Duckett 5, Root 46

Ooh, don't do that, Joseph. Root's beaten by a whisker, prodding forward, Jadeja and then immediately indicates there was someone wandering in front of the sight screen. One of my biggest bug bearers, that, along with people standing up in the middle of overs. Jadeja's not having any of it and he's even less impressed with Root when he clips him off his pads for a boundary.
