Yadav continues and beats Stokes, to the excitement of everyone around the bat. The pair trade a few singles, though, both looking reasonably secure in defence. We're going to have an extra over, by the looks of things.

Forty-seven balls for Ben Stokes to get to double figures, which is the second-longest in his Test career.

He played really well, Root, but had two nightmarish moments: the run-out, for which he was more or less totally responsible for, and the oddity with his own dismissal was he had been scoring so freely.

Stokes breaks the deadlock as he clips Shami away for one. Bairstow gets a 90mph delivery to deal with, before he leaves a ball that sails inches over his off stump. Kohli, who already had the look of a particularly pleased cat, looked even happier after that delivery.

England have had a horrible session. It all seemed relatively calm until the run-out - and then it all started to disintegrate.

Jadeja gets through another over and Bairstow's more than content to flat bat it out. There's not an awful amount of turn there for Jadeja, but he's keeping a lid on the runs, which, with a handful of overs left, isn't a bad idea.

Shami is back on to see if he can smash another batsman's off stump in half. Stokes gets his feet moving, moving forward but keeping that bat and pad tight together. It's so interesting, watching Stokes and Bairstow reign in that attacking instinct to see England through to stumps without any further damage. You'd suspect the spinners will carry on targeting that, trying to throw the ball up invitingly as often as they can.

The shadows are starting to lengthen now in Vizag as Jadeja tosses it up,  but Bairstow's having none of it. Just 20 minutes left for these two to see out.

Nothing. Not even a little sniffle on Snicko. Kohli came racing down from leg slip to review it, but the ball hit nothing as it sailed past Stokes' outside edge.

I'm not sure he's hit that with the bat. But Kohli must have heard something.

We're going upstairs, no matter how much Stokes' shakes his head. He's pushing forward to Jadeja, Kohli is insistent that he's edged it behind and he's asked for a review.

That four from Stokes was the first boundary in 18 overs. Until then, Root was the only England batsman to hit one.

Mark Jones: When can we start asking for Ian Bell to be recalled??

Dale McAndrew: Where's that dog when you need him?

Yadav has rather spectacular figures of 1-7 from his six overs. Stokes, however, can't let a filthy bit of short stuff go by without a helping hand. He shapes, cuts and the ball flies away to the boundary. That's the second boundary from an England batsman. Yes, the second. We're 43 overs in. Sums up how tough they've found this session.

It's been poor, poor batting. They got themselves out: a run-out; Duckett played inside the line; it was immature by Joe Root - one turned and hit his glove, then he went to slog it over the top; Moeen just got his pad on the line. The low scuttler hasn't got anybody out. And I haven't seen the jumping ball yet.

Jadeja continues. He spears it in, Bairstow shows it the full face of his bat. Rinse and repeat for six balls. Kohli boosts his fielders up with some shouting and hand clapping as the England fans look distinctly more nervous.

Stokes tries to smash a Yadav short ball into next week, misses it and the ball hits the bail but doesn't knock it off. Saha stares at it as though he can will it, X-Men style, to fall off. A lucky break for Stokes, who turns another low grubber into the pads of short leg. The floodlights are on, an oddly pretty contrast against Vizag's clear blue skies.
