I was saying before England batted, you can't afford to give India a 100-run lead. At the moment somebody has got to bat very well to get near a 100 lead. This is not Manchester or Yorkshire so don't pray for rain.

Ashwin takes a well deserved breather, with Jadeja coming on. Bairstow decides the best way to calm the nerves is to come haring down for a risky second run. The fielder at fine leg hits the stumps but Bairstow was home. Stokes, at the other end, might have been in a bit more trouble. The bat was abandoned as he ran to make his ground.

Yadav is getting it to stay low. Horribly low. Stokes smothers the spin, jabbing his bat down to protect his pads. It's a cracking contest, especially considering Yadav is on debut. He's not been overwhelmed by the occasion at all, and his consistency has been excellent.

Bairstow presses forward and Ashwin gets an absolute beauty to slip past his outside edge. Kohli, grinning like the proverbial cat at slip, enjoyed that one. Bairstow does what any batsman does when they're beaten - prods at the pitch. It's only going to turn more, I'd suspect.

It's not a raging turner, let's be honest. There's been some shocking, poor batting.

Andy Pickford: Time to re-open that "Who's the better batsman, Virat Kohli or Joe Root" vote? Can't see Root getting 62% today.

Bairstow misjudges a straight ball from Yadav, playing for turn that isn't there, before he clips off his pads to get off the mark. Stokes decides this is the opportune time to take a quick single, and he's lucky that the fielder chooses to shy at the wrong end. The ball rolls harmlessly past the stumps, much to Kohli's annoyance. Bairstow then tries to smash the ball past Yadav but the bowler fields smartly to keep the pressure on.

England will have to find a right-hander to bat in the middle order because it's so difficult for left-handers.

Geoffrey's off on one about the state of the dismissals today. He's right. Cook aside, everyone's gotten themselves out. Or in Hameed's case, their batting partner has got them out. Ashwin zips through another over, Stokes watchful throughout. There's plenty more natter around the bat now.

It's pressure, pressure, pressure. A little bit of turn with men round the bat. It's a little bit about technique but it's a mental game.

Going swimmingly, this, for England. Jonny Bairstow's welcomed to the crease with a ball that turns into his pads. Everyone goes up, but it's sliding down. It had Bairstow in a real muddle though. He goes to meet Stokes for a chat as Yadav gets a congratulatory back slap from his captain.

India will love DRS now. What I've seen so far there has been some naive, immature batting. There has been one proper wicket so far and that's Alastair Cook.

Out! Good review from India. Moeen came skipping out of his crease but he was struck flush on the pad. Hawkeye reckons it was going on to hit leg. A nice moment for Yadav, on debut. A less nice moment for Moeen, who has to wander back to the dressing room.

Now then. Yadav's struck Moeen on the pad. He was in full dancing-down-the-pitch mode. Umpire says no dice but Kohli makes the signal.

England need to take a deep breath and somehow try to develop a partnership, but also get this scoreboard to tick over. Virat Kohli has been very clever, changing his close catchers every now and again. He's trying to force the risky shots and that's what happened with Joe Root - 'go on Joe, try and hit one over the top'.

Martin Whiteley: Disappointing that Duckett didn't get the hint from 1st Test that he can't show all his stumps then prod a bat at a turning ball.

Dan Heath: How can you get to this level with such an obvious technical issue?

Graham of Brockworth: Duckett wrong technique against good spin. Not the right fit for tours of Bangladesh and India. He'll score loads on flat tracks.

Drinks break - Eng 80-4published at 34 overs

Ashwin continues and Ben Stokes sees out the over calmly, carefully, and with as much of the bat as possible. There's a nervy moment when Ashwin spears one into his pads, but it's heading down the leg side.
