Jason Cole: Hameed really is a baby Boycott then...

Jed Court: Woeful cricket from England. Root owes the team a ton now... So poor from such an experienced player!

  2. Eng 60-2published at 24 overs

Duckett sees out an over of Ashwin but he doesn't look comfortable. He's beaten for pace twice, the keeper is yelping in his ear and the crowd are cheering everything the India fielders do. It's a maiden, though.

I was rather hoping no-one would point that out. Er. Sorry, Hameed...

  4. Eng 60-2published at 23 overs

Root, looking chastened after that mess of a run out, yells 'no!' at Duckett as he considers a second run off Jadeja. He then chucks a loose drive at a delivery that just kisses the outside edge, but it flies through gully and away to the boundary. Jadeja spins away in annoyance and Root returns to defending.

That was a seriously impressive bit of keeping from Saha to complete the run out. Not that it will make Hameed fell any better. Ashwin greets Ben Duckett with one that balloons off his inside edge and over the stumps. There's a huge gap between Duckett's bat and pad, which, I'd susepct, is where Ashwin will be aiming the majority of his deliveries.

Saha had to run to his left, then flicked the ball back to hit one stump. Rod Tucker didn't even need the third umpire. Root is culpable there. He dragged Hameed down, thinking there was two. He changed his mind after Hameed has responded. It's a terrible waste from England's point of view. A moment like that can completely overhaul the tempo of a match.

Hameed run out (Jayant) 13 (Eng 51-2)

He's out! What an absolute mess. Sent back by Root as they looked for a second run, Hameed was halfway down the pitch and not even the face-first sprawl could save him. He looks absolutely gutted as he trudges off.

Oh has Hameed run himself out? That looks horribly out, we're going upstairs for a look.

Ashwin gets the ball in the air a bit more than Jadeja but because Jadeja bowls the ball from a lower trajectory, you feel his skidders could be even more dangerous.

Root's always reminded me of a baby Joffrey from Game of Thrones, personally. Ashwin continues, and Root's constantly trying to get down the pitch at him, trying to throw him off line. He spoons one up and over Ashwin's outstretched hand to long on, and adds another couple to the total.

Root milks Jadeja for a few singles before Hameed scores his first run on the off-side, thanks to the massive gap in the field Jadeja responds with a quicker ball that spins through Root's defence, before Root comes down the pitch and gets a thick edge through slip.

Isn't it amazing that Jadeja bowls to an identical field whether Root or Hameed is on strike?

  15. Eng 40-1published at 18 overs

Ashwin will continue, tossing the ball into Hameed's eyeline and trying to tempt him into the big shot. He'll be waiting a while. Hameed hops down the pitch and drives for a single, before Root clips off his pads for a couple. They do run well together, these two.

Ken from Newcastle: A day off, in the warm out of the rain and Root already looking in the mood. Does it get any better?

Anonymous Dad: My son, Alex, is five days old. He has also given me the brownie points for taking the 4am shift whilst my wife sleeps. Commentary in one hand, baby in the other; win win!

  17. Eng 36-1published at 17 overs

Jadeja gets things rolling and has a huge shriek for lbw against Root turned down with his first ball. It was hitting Root high on the pad and Hawkeye suggests it would have clipped leg stump. Root readjusts, ignores the chirping in his ear from Saha and blocks the rest of the over.

Cheers, Steph. It is the most remarkable piece of video I've seen this year.

And, Simon Zoller, Steph owes you an apology. It was our own Chris Hurst who was sat next to you in Vietnam. I'm making him do Gangnam Style as punishment.
