England have bowled nicely. They have to bowl for dots. It will take discipline and hard work. They will to take their opportunities. On this surface, one or two of the India players must think there's a hundred out there.

  3. Lunch - Ind 60-1published at 22 overs

    Pujara 8, Parthiv 38

Anderson, modelling some snazzy purple bits on his boots, takes the last over. There's hands on heads as Parthiv gets a thick inside edge but it was controlled and ran along the ground for a single. And now, lunch. Time for England to do a bit of regrouping.

  5. Ind 59-1published at 21 overs

Stokes raps Parthiv's bat with a short ball that knocks the bat out of his hands. Parthiv bends to retrieve it, sees Pujara jogging up the pitch and abandons it, instead running through for a single. Stokes is not best pleased.

  7. Ind 58-1published at 20 overs

Anderson summons up all his effort for a short ball that just about gets into Pujara's eyeline, but it's wide and Pujara lets it drift by. There's a teeny tiny hint of reverse swing towards  the end of the over. Root and Cook were working hard on the ball earlier to try and get it moving.

Jonathan Barton: Off to watch my son Joe in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I'd like India all out when show has finished. Please pass onto bowlers. Ta.

  9. Ind 57-1published at 19 overs

    Pujara 8, Parthiv 35

England are probably looking forward to whatever is for lunch. Even the Barmy Army have gone quiet. Stokes sends down an accurate over which Pujara either defends or ignores. That's the second maiden of the innings.

Parthiv is the sort of batsman that an opposing captain worries about because he is always keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

  11. Ind 57-1published at 18 overs

Anderson returns, and watches the ball get driven past him for a boundary to bring up India's 50. Another lovely on-drive from Parthiv races away for four. Anderson looks utterly thrilled. Cook shoves his hands in his pockets like a naughty school boy and ponders.

    Pujara 8, Parthiv 27

Snicko shows that Vijay did indeed edge that Stokes delivery in the last over. Those behind the wicket knew it. Pujara rounds off an accurate over by clipping Stokes off his hip and away for a boundary. It's so very flat out there. India will be eyeing up a long old stay at the crease.

England just have to hope that the India batsmen make mistakes. They have had one from Vijay. They just have to bowl the dots and hope for the errors.

  15. Ind 44-1published at 16 overs

Rashid replaces Moeen and appeals to the umpire to give Pujara out lbw. Pretty sure that hit the bat, and it looked high. Rashid keeps Pujara on the defensive for the rest of the over.

Andy Turner: All credit to Murali Vijay for walking, you don't see that very often anymore.

  17. Ind 43-1published at 15 overs

    Pujara 4, Parthiv 26

Stokes didn't look convinced by that at all. It was the fielders behind the stumps that made the noise, and Stokes joined in afterwards. The umpire definitely shook his head, too. It's brought Pujara to the crease, who gets off the mark with a push to the boundary.

Vijay just wafted at that delivery, that's why he is so upset with himself. It was short, it bounced and he played a nothing shot. He didn't even wait for the umpire's decision.

Vijay walks! Stokes has got him, with a nothing ball and a nothing shot! Outside off stump, Vijay wafted and nicked it, the umpire shook his head but Vijay turned and marched off. So Buttler's drop cost just one run in the end.

That was the sort of chance England have to cling on to if they want to get back into this game.
