My colleague pointed out earlier that this is the first time Buttler has fielded in a first-class match since September 2013. It was a difficult chance but had he clung on, it would have stopped England's shoulders from slumping any further.

Buttler had to dive, but he's a wicketkeeper so he will be used to that. It was much harder than the chance put down by Ashwin yesterday.

Oh! Buttler's dropped Vijay! A difficult catch, Buttler flying to his right at mid-wicket, but he did get a hand to it. He just couldn't cling on. He ends up face first on the turf, thumping his fist in irritation.

  4. Ind 37-0published at 13 overs

Short from Rashid, and Vijay leans back and cuts it away for three. Cook looks fairly pained as he observes the field. He'll have to get his thinking cap on. Especially as Rashid drops too short again and Vijay gets on top of it, flicking it away to the boundary.

Australia are chasing 127 to win the final Test and avoid a 3-0 series defeat after bowling South Africa out for 250 on the fourth day in Adelaide.

Stephen Cook, 81 not out overnight, was last man out for a superb 104, while Mitchell Starc finished with 4-80 and Josh Hazlewood 3-60.

Australia, who have never been whitewashed in a home Test series, are 16-0 in their pursuit. South Africa's bowlers will have to do something special if they are to make history...

  6. Ind 30-0published at 12 overs

Bairstow is doing his best behind the stumps to gee everyone up, yelping every time the bowler pitches one on a decent length. India aren't having any of it though. These two are content to work the singles and not take any risks.

Rashid is bowling well, a very good line and length. His confidence has improved since the first Test in Rajkot.

  8. Ind 29-0published at 11 overs

If I were a bowler - and believe me, I'm not - I'd make every batsman who played a bad shot bowl as punishment. Mind you, I am incredibly petulant. Parthiv works Rashid uppishly towards Root, but there's not enough on it to keep the fielder interested. Root contents himself with flinging the ball back to the keeper.

  9. drinks break

    Ind 28-0published at 10 overs

A plane goes rumbling over the ground just as Moeen gets ready for his next over. The crowd, still small but enthusiastic, cheer everything as Parthiv adds another single to the total. Time for a drink.

This is a dream track, England are 100 to 150 short here. Another long day in the field beckons.

Spin from both ends as Rashid replaces Anderson. He gets maybe a touch of turn, but that's it. Every sensible shot Vijay and Parthiv play rubs England's batting performance back in their faces. Parthiv turns the ball deftly through short leg to ensure Rashid doesn't start with a maiden.

Sometimes Moeen doesn't come on for ages. Now he's on, partly because the seamers haven't got the ball to move in the air or off the pitch. It looks ominous for England.

And with that Woakes is out of the attack, and Moeen will have a go. Parthiv greets him with a shot and a half, a drive that beats a diving Buttler and runs down to the boundary. Moeen follows that with an utterly awful full toss. In fact, full toss doesn't do that justice. Absolute rubbish. It reached Parthiv's shoulder.

A lovely straight drive from Parthiv clatters into the stumps at the non-striker's end, rather than running away to the boundary. There's nothing doing for Anderson. No swing, no bounce, no nothing. Apparently the second day is the best day for batting at Mohali, which will cheer England up no end.

It has indeed hit his shirt. Not a great ball, that; a leggy delivery that Parthiv was trying to pull. Umpire Erasmus does the requisite hand movement, and Parthiv will continue.

He's saying it's hit his chest, which he probably shouldn't do. I think this will be not out.

Hello, has Woakes got Parthiv? He's been given out caught behind, but he makes the T sign, after not-so-subtly indicating that it hit his shirt.

Anderson continues, this time with two slips, trying to get Vijay driving outside off stump. Vijay's having none of it before a dinky push past Anderson picks up a couple. Anderson ends up sprawled on the wicket trying to stop it, looking as cheerful as you'd expect.
