Parthiv Patel averages 59 as an opener in first-class cricket.

    Parthiv 12, Vijay 4

That appeal was strange. Vijay was stood right on the line, he didn't make any effort to get into his crease but he was in the way of the path of the ball. The umpires, sensibly, wave play on. Parthiv greets Woakes with back-to-back boundaries, the first cracked through mid-wicket, the second a streaky edge that beats Bairstow.

Surely that can't be given out. Common sense must prevail. You would think this is one where the captain could withdraw the appeal. There was nothing there, Vijay just stood still.

  4. Ind 8-0published at 3 overs

Haseeb Hameed will be off for a X-ray at the end of the Test. It's his little finger that's causing the problem. Anderson continues, forcing Vijay to play everything he sends down. A short ball is summarily swivel-pulled away to the boundary, before England appeal for obstructing the field. Vijay was stood on the line, Anderson struck him on the back pad with a throw at the stumps and Bairstow went up behind the stumps. All very odd.

My memory of Parthiv is that he's a bit of a dasher, so if he gets going he could cause some damage.

  6. Ind 4-0published at 2 overs

Ooft. Parthiv tries to smash his first ball down to the boundary and narrowly avoids edging Woakes through to Bairstow. He looks a little fraught, trying to dash a single that was never there, before a clip off his pads runs away to the boundary and gets him off the mark. He's missed 83 consecutive Tests for India since last playing in 2008.

Anderson, as usual, will start things off, with Murali Vijay facing. He's got three slips ready and waiting. Gary Ballance is currently on as 12th man - Hameed, after taking a rap on the gloves yesterday, is off the field with a finger problem. England will be hoping that doesn't turn into anything more serious. A maiden.

In England's last seven Tests in Asia, going back to the series against Pakistan in the UAE last year, England's seamers have taken 60 wickets at an average of 25.3, while the spinners have 67 wickets at 39.9

Here come the umpires, closely followed by England. And here come India, with Parthiv Patel getting ready for his first Test innings in eight years.

England have to hope their seamers get a little nip or skid. If you'd said to India that they would be batting 20 minutes into day two after losing the toss, they would have bitten your hand off. England need a couple of early ones, then get it reverse swinging. There's not much there for the spinners, you have to rely on patience.

It looks so easy for a lot of the time for the batsmen, so England are going to have to bowl really well, take every chance, and somehow get the two big men, Kohli and Pujara, out cheaply.

283, after winning the toss on a good pitch with a quick outfield? England won't be happy with that. Bairstow's 89 offered the most resistance, and he was supported by Stokes and Buttler, before they mimicked the top order and fell to loose shots. It's down to the bowlers now, who are out there warming up.

That is just the morning that India would have wanted. They have wrapped up the last two England wickets with the minimum of fuss.

That's out, I'm afraid. Hitting the top of Batty's leg stump. It's taken India just over 15 minutes to clean up the tail, and Shami will finish with 3-63 from his 21.5 overs. India will be relishing a chance to bat on this pitch.

    Batty 1, Anderson 8

Anderson unfurls that reverse sweep and picks up a couple from Jadeja's last delivery. He does play that exceptionally well. India have the field spread very deep. Far too deep for a number 11, I'd suggest.
