    Pujara 22, Kohli 7

Pujara is looking as comfortable as a man in a fluffy robe and a pair of slippers. He's out of his crease to Anderson, guiding the ball to third man for four with surgical precision. Kohli might be the show, but Pujara is the dough. England should be just as worried about the stoic number three.

If you're just waking up, then you've probably forgotten to switch your alarm from weekday mode. The England innings was wrapped up inside 20 minutes this morning and, since then, the tourists have desperately tried to make something happen. Chris Woakes, bending his back, has Virat Kohli swaying away from a bouncer. Good, probing stuff from England. India patient in defence. Only three runs in six overs. Something must give.

If the ball isn't doing anything you must try and stifle the batsmen. Pujara seems to have endless patience but even he will get frustrated. You have to force the mistake.

    Pujara 18, Kohli 7

From underneath his shirt, it's very noticeable that James Anderson has a white plaster on his chest. It's covering his left, erm, nipple. Touch of running rash? A shaving injury? The ball is reversing, with an in-ducker almost getting through Kohli. Pujara looks much more comfortable, with a forward defence solid enough to work the door at a nightclub.

England have bowled well since lunch. Areas, giving nothing away. This is the sort of bowling that proved too much for the England batsmen's patience but, at the moment, India aren't looking likely to get bored. If you offered Alastair Cook another pace bowler right now, I think he'd happily give you his tractor.

Matt Roberts: Up early performing butler duties for the wife, who has suffered a leg more badly broken than Duckett's forward defensive.

    Pujara 18, Kohli 6

We wondered how long it would be before James Anderson was recalled to bowl at his old mate Virat Kohli and we should wonder no longer. Five times Jimmy has got Kohli at an average of 17.40. Two slips, plane deafening as it rumbles overhead, Kohli leaving the ball with a flourish. Stalemate in the first round of that contest.

Kohli is the big wicket, the one they believe will cause some panic in the batting ranks. Kohli will want to do exactly the opposite.

Woakes, a perfect quiff, has a skating approach to the crease. There's just one slip for Pujara but also a very straight short mid-on. Bowling in the mid-80s, the Brummie Botham is getting a hint of movement in the air. Reverse or conventional? Woakes then tries to get the ball into Kohli's hip, with the skipper jumping to defend.

The paltry crowd comes alive with superstar skipper Kohli on strike to Rashid. He eases into his work with a honey-off-a-spoon square drive for four. On that off-side fence, Gareth Batty loses the race with the ball. Batty will have to enjoy his fielding, because he might not get much chance with the ball.

Not only have England shifted the annoying Parthiv, they have welcomed Virat Kohli. The Pujara-Kohli axis has been the most likely of the India team to bat long, but, arguably, there are inroads to be made if England can get another quick one. If. I wonder how long it will be before James Anderson gets a go at Kohli.

I think more than anyone else, Jonny Bairstow deserves that. Straight away he was confident that was one England should challenge. He encouraged Alastair Cook to go for the challenge. Partiv has certainly done his job. He's grabbed his opportunities with both hands.

    Rashid 6-0-18-1

Absolutely incredible. Not for one second did this look like a decent shout. Parthiv Patel had taken one, maybe two steps down the crease. Height looked an issue, not to mention if it was going to pass the leg stump. DRS, though, showed the ball had turned from outside the off stump and would have hit leg just below the top of the wood. England badly needed that. Well done, Jonny Bairstow.
