It's nice and sedate inside the circular stadium, with eruptions of noise coming from the shrill crowd each time India add to the score. Rashid continues to throw the ball outside the stump, but Kohli is too savvy for that old trick.

I think Pujara would have just about got there. It was all a bit of a scramble, partly because Pujara was a little bit impeded by Stokes. It's the sort of uncertainty that England are trying to create.

  3. Ind 113-2published at 08:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2016

Pujara has to hurry, diving to make his ground when Kohli calls for a short single. The throw misses anyway. When Stokes gets too straight, Pujara tickles fine for what feels like the first boundary in living memory, following up with a slash aerially over the slips. The score moves and you can't help but wonder what damage India might do this evening if England don't get something soon.

Do let me know if you've seen Gareth Batty. Complete this sentence. I have just seen Gareth Batty...

Still Rashid, with the sleeveless-sweater-wearing Pujara treating this wide line with suspicion. At the end of the over, he gets together with umpire Marais Erasmus and points into the distance. They both stare. "He was there, Marais, I swear. I'm sure that was Gareth Batty".

It's finally happened: Australia have won a game of cricket.

After seven successive defeats in all formats and faced with the prospect of a first Test series whitewash on home soil, Australia have beaten South Africa by eight wickets in the third Test in Adelaide.

Set 127 to win, they wrapped up victory on the fourth evening of the day-night encounter thanks to David Warner's 47 and 40 from captain Steve Smith.

Matt Renshaw (above), the England-born opener and one of three Australia debutants, finished unbeaten on 34 off 137 balls.

Stokes v Kohli isn't a contest you would imagine to be humdrum, but the England all-rounder is trying to bore out the India skipper here. Packed off-side field, hiding the ball wide. Kohli not interested. A maiden that will not live long in the memory.

God's country, Kev. Is that Biddulph? Leek? Too short from Rashid, allowing Kohli to score on the leg side, then a misfield from James Anderson gifts Pujara a couple. England have thrown everything at India for more than an hour after lunch, with only the wicket of Parthiv to show for it. The test is maintaining that intensity. If they can't, India will run away.

The red-haired fire of Ben Stokes to the bearded cockiness of Virat Kohli. Two wide slips, two catchers square on the off side, Stokes throwing his hands in the air when the ball gets through for a single. At the other end, Cheteshwar Pujara is slowly digging a trench into which he can retreat for the next day or so. Gareth Batty has just nipped into town for some Christmas shopping.

It is spin, Adil Rashid coming on at the end of an excellent spell by James Anderson. There's turn for Rashid, but it's too slow to be threatening Kohli. When Rashid is a touch too short, Kohli plays on the leg side like a man who could make runs with a snooker cue. It's quiet, the sky is blue and England are in for hard yakka. They must stick at it.

A chance! Ben Stokes gets a leading edge from Virat Kohli, who is looking to clip a full ball into the leg side. It flies square on the off side, in between two catchers lurking square. Stokes, who was given a Jay Demerit point after a clash with Kohli yesterday, holds his head in his hands. That would have been sweet.

India may have just come through the England tidal wave of pacey pressure. The lead is beneath 200 and both of these middle-order maestros can consider themselves 'in'. Anderson to Kohli, two grabbers in the slips, but a line too wide to threaten an edge. It won't be long before we see some spin.

Both these Indian batsmen know time is on their side. They've faced half a dozen overs of aggressive, accurate pace bowling but not really that threatening. Whilst England have been applying pressure you don't feel like it's got to this pair yet.

Drinks break - Ind 94-2published at 07:43 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2016

Supporting your local team, Matt? Ben Stokes, the man who took England's first wicket, is back into the attack. All sweat and flame hair, Stokes bowls a full length in search of some reverse, only to be met with a Kohli drive through mid-off for four. Next ball, Kohli tucks off his hip across the ice-rink outfield for another boundary. Drinks. A chance for Gareth Batty to see his team-mates.
