Moeen's got the crowd on his back. Every shot he plays is accompanied by an ooh. He sweeps a single from Jadeja before Jennings plays that reverse sweep again for a boundary. That's not the best he's played it, the ball hitting the bottom edge and evading the keeper, but it's still bringing him success. Famous last words, but he looks fairly unruffled out there.

Moeen is batting in the dark without any lights on at all.

Haseeb Hameed, his hand covered in swathes of strapping, is watching in the stand, along with his family. He'll not like the look of that from Ashwin. Another gorgeous delivery that bounces just past the off stump, easily drifting past Moeen's defensive push and exciting everyone around the bat. Moeen manages to get off strike to keep the score ticking over. He's looked horribly uncomfortable so far.

I would not have 2 youngsters opening the batting, so Cook stays at 1, then Hameed, Jennings, Root. Can't understand who thought Moeen should bat in the top 5 batsmen. He's a 6 or 7 at best.

Shot! Lovely from Jennings, a reverse sweep that raced away from the boundary. And another! Jayant tossed it up and Jennings obliged, moving his feet and cracking it away through cover. He's a batsman who looks more comfortable on the attack, but his attacking shots are measured. They're all safely rolling along the ground and evading the fielders.

This is going to be the test for the young man. When you have had a lot of dot balls - what do you do to break free? So far Jennings has been impressive. Patience and footwork are going to be the key here.

    Ashwin 15-1-45-1

Jennings has got a very expressive face. There's the odd blink of disbelief as another one spins past the outside edge, and then a wry smile as an Ashwin delivery cannons off the top of the bat and away to safety. He's negotiating it well so far. Moeen isn't looking quite so comfortable, ending the over with a nothing waft outside off stump.

Hello, here's Jayant Yadav. And he's beaten Jennings all end up with a lovely delivery that fizzes past Jennings' defensive push forward. Jennings has a little prod at the pitch before cracking away through the covers for a single, before Moeen ignores the temptation to crash a straighter delivery towards the boundary.

Beautiful from Ashwin. He gets one to turn past Moeen's defensive grope forwards and Patel whips the bails off, but the back foot is safely grounded. That spun sharply, which will give Moeen plenty to think about. He sticks to defending for the rest of the over, bat meeting everything that Ashwin twirls his way.

Bat like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. It is simple then. They would bat all day. So there is a bit of turn. So what? Play it with the spin and don't make mistakes.

    Moeen 2, Jennings 68

Oh, don't do that, Moeen. His first delivery from Jadeja is tossed up and Moeen flicks it up and it drops just inches in front of a diving mid-wicket. He's so appealing to watch, such an elegance about him, but not that shot and not to that delivery. He gets off the mark with a much more orthodox push into the leg side.

How about Hameed, Jennings, Cook, Root, Stokes? A minor tweak to take some pressure off Cookie as the Ashes approach?

Root was playing for turn, judging by the replay, and it stayed straight. Excellent work from Ashwin, and well supported by Kohli. Top celebration too, lobbing the ball into the air and giving a roar to the crowd. Moeen has joined debutant Jennings at the crease.

It was a lovely catch but beautifully bowled. He draws him, lures him wide. He plays for turn but it goes straight on. That is quality. They've got two-thirds of our batting now. They are into the all-rounders.

    Root c Kohli b Ashwin 21 (Eng 136-2)

What a catch that is! Superb work from Captain Kohli at the slip. Ashwin speared the ball a bit wider, getting Root to chase the ball, and it flew off the edge towards Kohli. Cool as you like, the captain stuck out his hands and snaffled the ball low to his left. Brilliant reflexes. Not that it'll cheer Root up.

    Root 21, Jennings 68

Is that a missed stumping? Root gets into a real mess, playing all around a Jadeja delivery that turns past the wicketkeeper and away for byes. That was horrid from Root. He was trying to work the ball away off his pads but it turned away from him and he ended up facing the wrong way.

England can beat India. There is not much between the two teams. But psychologically they have the edge. India don't collapse like us.

This is better from Ashwin. Jennings warily sees off the carrom ball but manages to clip the ball away for a single, before Root nudges a tossed up delivery away. It has started to turn a little earlier than in previous matches, but there's no demons in the pitch. Not yet, anyway.
