Kohli wasn't convinced but Jadeja has said, 'it's out'.

We carry on past the allotted 90. In the third ball of added time, Jadeja hits Stokes on the pads, appeals wildly, gets turned down on the field but convinces Kohli to send it upstairs.

It has not been pretty but Stokes is dragging himself through this. He keeps Jayant out for three deliveries before pinching a single and then finishing it out when Buttler hands strike back to him. If these two are still in at the end they will see it as a minor victory.

Virat Kohli could take the second new ball, but this old ball is doing plenty. It has certainly spun more on day one here than in the previous three Tests.

I don't think a ball has been middled for about 20 overs. Buttler picks up another couple with an inside edge that sends the ball away to backward square.

Ashwin is taken out of the attack, no doubt much to the relief of the England pair. The assault continues, though, through Jadeja who is unlucky to concede a four that Buttler edges through the slips. The Lancashire player then leaves a straight one and is almost clean bowled.

Buttler and Stokes try to turn the tide with a more proactive approach. It brings them a trio of singles and makes Jayant's latest over a less panicked affair for the tourists.

This is a series of heart in mouth moments. Stokes blocks, prods and mistimes to give India brief hope of claiming his wicket but somehow drags himself through another Ashwin over. If I didn't need them, I'd watching through my fingers.

Buttler looks as nervous as Stokes. He inside edges Jayant just short of leg slip and then has to dig in to see out a maiden. The screw continues to turn.

Stokes finally gets the chance to play his natural game with a powerful back-foot shot off Ashwin for four. The bowler quickly retains control, though, and has the batsman metaphorically on his back foot.
