    Jennings 92, Moeen 11

Umesh is regularly touching 90mph but his radar is off. A bouncer with plenty of venom in it slides harmlessly down leg, before another delivery has the wicketkeeper tumbling to his right to cut it off. Moeen and Jennings do well though, rotating the strike to keep the score ticking over.

It's a good opportunity for Moeen Ali. He can go on and get a big score. It's not been easy for him so far, he's not been at his most fluent.

  3. Eng 168-2published at 51 overs

Ashwin's decided to tempt Jennings' aggressive nature, tossing the ball up into his eyeline. He's not having any of it, ignoring what he can before he works a short ball out to point. The return throw nearly hits umpire Oxenford, who theatrically wags his finger in the fielder's direction.

Simon: I'd go w/Hameed & Cook opening w/Jennings 3 & Root back to 4 followed by Bairstow, Stokes, Butler & Ali in that order.

Totum: As the top run scorer from D1 county cricket can bat, do we have the top wicket taker from D1 in the team? I assume he can bowl.

Rich Hird: Can we have Hameed and Cook open, put Jennings in at 3 and drop Root back down to 4? Top order sorted. Easy stuff

  5. Eng 167-2published at 50 overs

Umesh Yadav will return for a quick burst at Moeen, once Kohli has finished fiddling about with the field. It's obvious that some short stuff is coming Moeen's way and he gets well under the first bouncer. His dismissal in the last Test, a truly awful hook shot to a Shami short ball, will still be fresh in India's minds.

Kohli has been incredibly defensive today. If Alastair Cook had captained like this, I can imagine what social media would have been saying back home. He would have been roasted on the spit.

    Jennings 89, Moeen 10

Back to some actual cricket. The break hasn't affected Jennings' concentration, and he sees out the rest of the over from Ashwin, before heading to the middle of the pitch for a conflab and a back slap with Moeen.

An umpire has emerged! It's Marais Erasmus, who was the third umpire, and will now be conducting the on-field decisions. He walks out, wiping his sunglasses, to a huge cheer from the crowd.

They could actually carry on without a square leg umpire - all the decisions go upstairs anyway.

I have no idea what's going on. Bhuvi Kumar is looking a bit bashful about the whole thing, England's batsmen are stood gawping, awaiting the new umpire. It feels a bit like Blind Date, waiting for the umpire to come down the stairs.

Arjun Sohanpal: Yikes. The OxenShield won't cover that area!

Carl Carritt: Surely that should be a red card for Bhuvi Kumar? Violent conduct!! #hopePaulisok

Umpire Reiffel has had a drink and the medical staff have helped him back to his feet. He's going off the field, and rightly so. So the third umpire, who up until 10 minutes ago was having a nice little sit down, looks like he'll be called onto the field.

Generally the umpires keep an eye on the fielder and then focus on the stumps. It wasn't exactly a flat, hard throw but that's pretty horrible.

  15. ouch!

Ooh, that's nasty - umpire Paul Reiffel has taken a blow to the head. Bhuvi Kumar, throwing the ball back to Ashwin, has struck him on the head at square leg. It wasn't fired in with any malice but it's struck him flush on the head and Reiffel is down on the ground. The medical team are out there.

Do we even need selectors? Turns out the top run scorer in the top division can play. A computer would have selected him for the tour all along.

    Moeen 9, Jennings 88

That's more like it from Moeen, a jazzy flick to a short Jadeja ball to pick up a couple of runs. He's not reading the length well though, particularly from Jadeja. Twice he doesn't get to the pitch of a fuller ball, and twice he flicks the ball up into the air. In the crowd the Cookie Monster, who I can only imagine must be roasting in the heat, shrugs his shoulders.

Jennings has decided not to wait for the bad ball, he is creating his own scoring opportunities with the reverse sweep. He's approaching a hundred, which will be quite a feat on debut, but England will be hoping it's just not a hundred and that he carries on and gets a big score.

  19. Eng 163-2published at 47 overs

A little uppish from Jennings, trying to run Ashwin through third man, but the ball landed safely away from any lurking fielders. Those boundaries have just stopped India from completely turning the screw. A fairly defensive field from Kohli will have helped matters, too.
