I thought he could have bowled Adil Rashid earlier. Rashid had a poor day yesterday, probably his worst of the series, but you can't just leave him out of the attack. Moeen bowled for an hour and a half and India played him nicely. When that happens you have to change it and encourage the batsman to make a mistake against the new bowler.

Big appeal from Rashid as Kohli plays across the line and is struck on the front pad but he is begging. Not out. The relentless addition of runs to India's total continues.

Virat Kohli now has 4,000 Test runs. He's the 14th Indian batsman to get there and the second youngest at 28. Sachin Tendulkar was 24 when he reached 4,000.

So, anyone else out on a cricket team Christmas do last night? Any stories to tell? In fact, if you've got any such stories from Christmas past let us know. We could do with a laugh.

Kohli claims a single off Anderson's first ball and moves to 4,000 Test runs. Both batsman add another single in an another tame England over.

Come on then Rashid, what have you got? He was poor yesterday evening in a spell that included one of the worst balls of the series. It is a gentle start here, with the two India players claiming a single each.

It was the Christmas night out for my oldest group of cricket mates last night (I left early - I'm dull but ever the professional). One of the lads did a runner even earlier than me, though, feigning to tie his shoe laces before scarpering. There may well be a few England players who fancy doing the same right now.

Anderson bowls a maiden but it offers no threat to the India pair.

What an ovation. This is what Indian cricket's all about. This is what you expect when you come here. India are putting themselves in a very strong position.

He will feel very good, particularly after what's been talked about in the last couple of innings. He will feel it's a comeback hundred.

Well played Murali Vijay. His second century of the series is brought up with an outside edge to point for a single off Moeen, prompting a thudding beat of drums and huge cheers. Whoever is in that Donald Duck outfit is very happy with that. Knee-deep in sweat but happy.

From the start India have made, they would have to be favourites to bat out the overs today. If they do, they could be 420 by the close. Virat Kohli is the world-class performer and the rest are good batsmen, but they're good batsmen that go all the way down to 10. You look at them and they could all contribute a fifty or so.

    Kohli 37, Vijay 99

Jimmy Anderson is eventually brought into the attack. After a mini conference between bowler, captain and Stokes, England's all-time leading wicket-taker varies his length and pace but doesn't trouble Kohli or Vijay, who moves to 99 with a push down the ground that Rashid runs round to collect.

The effect of the roller might start to wear out over the next hour or so and the ball will start to grip. India will need to be very very careful. It's the type of pitch where a batsman should never feel that he is set.

Moeen, fuelled by a drink, continues. He goes round to Vijay and is given hope by a ball that stays low but the batsman shows quick hands to keep the ball out. At the start of today's play, England were looking to make something happen. Now they are waiting and hoping for a way back into the game. Credit to this India duo for that.

Kohli now has 1,000 runs in 2016, brought up in typically ruthless fashion. He rocks back and has all the time in the world to pull a short Stokes ball away for four.

I'm afraid after the initial excitement, England haven't looked very likely. One wicket slightly flatters them in that hour's play. They've created very few chances. India's batsmen have looked serene and confident.

  18. Ind 204-2published at 68 overs

Like a cat burglar in search of a precious bounty, Vijay is tiptoeing towards a ton. He pushes off the back foot to cover for a single off Moeen, who is still plugging away but looks in desperate need of a blow.

I can only apologise if our alert for that first wicket woke you up and you've stuck with this. Since Pujara's dismissal India have given England nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada.

Stokes, ever the warrior, digs a short ball in that has Vijay ducking, but ducking well.

Kohli really is looking in ominous touch. I'm surprised England haven't brought Jimmy Anderson on to bowl. Anderson v Kohli could be interesting. Why would you not bring on your number one bowler, a man with 467 wickets under his belt?
