Moeen's started to get some consistent turn now, getting one to move past Parthiv's outside edge. His length is a little off and Parthiv hammers it away into the covers, before stealing the single with a push past short legs. Jennings stuck out a hand to try to snaffle that but it was moving too quick and a shade wider than he anticipated.

  3. Ind 283-4published at 96 overs

A round of applause for Jonny Bairstow, who pushed for that review against Karun Nair. Moeen liked the look of it but it was Bairstow who convinced Cook to go upstairs. Parthiv Patel, who said England's spinners had been exposed yesterday, faces up to Rashid and gets a single courtesy of a misfield from Root.

If England can get rid of Kohli they will be in business. But as long as he is at the crease he will look to score runs. He is the key.

Ooh! So close! Parthiv Patel prods at his first delivery from Moeen, the ball flies off the outside edge and just over the head of Stokes at slip. Stokes is on his knees, thumping at the turf. It would have required one amazing back flip to clutch on to that. There are a few more smiles out there now in the field.

Kohli might be suggesting to the umpire that Nair got a nick on that ball. My first impression was he didn't and it just turned and that is the reason Jonny Bairstow was so insistent on DRS being taken.

Nair lbw Moeen 13 (Eng 279-4)

Out. That took an age. There were two noises, which confused things, but the first noise looked to be the bat hitting the pad, and the second one the ball hitting the pad. Nair played at it and Moeen spun it past the inside edge. Kohli is not a happy bunny.

There's a squiggle on the snicko but I reckon that's the ball starting to hit the pad. I don't think he's got an edge on that.

Bairstow was the one who insisted on the review. He had the best view.

This looks a good shout for lbw against Karun Nair. Bairstow likes it and so does Cook, as he makes the T sign. It's been given not out on the field.

Rashid looks the most likely to get a wicket, now the ball's turning square. Nair can't quite read him, inside edging another ball onto his pads, before he works a single through cover. More turn from Rashid has Kohli grinning at the bowler and Rashid staring at Kohli like he's personally offended him by not getting an edge to that delivery. Kohli sticks to defending for the rest of the over.

The reverse sweep is a sensible option. There is no man out there and you are going with the spin to Moeen.

  14. Ind 278-3published at 93 overs

Nair gets a bit stride in, spins his wrists and reverse-sweeps Moeen away to the boundary. What a lovely looking shot that is, right up until you get it wrong. A single brings Kohli back on strike, and the captain continues to work Moeen away for a couple of runs.

Cripes, that's close. Rashid is into a rhythm now and he strikes Nair on the pad with the googly. Nair didn't know much about that, but an inside edge has saved him, otherwise I'd wager that would have been hitting the stumps. It's rattled Nair slightly, as he takes a quick single and only just runs his bat over the line.

If Kohli doubles this score India will get a really big lead. England have bowled well to him for his last 20 runs; they have restricted him. England could do with two quickfire wickets - bang bang.

    Ind 269-3

There it is, a half-century that's felt inevitable since he walked out this morning. A misfield from Jos Buttler grants Kohli a single and he raises his bat to the crowd, who are chanting his name. It's his 15th Test half-century, and he's timed this innings wonderfully well.

  19. Ind 268-3published at 90 overs

Rashid's getting some sharp turn now. He turns the ball past Nair's defensive prod forward, bringing about ooh's from Jonny Bairstow, before he repeats it with the next delivery. The last ball of the over is even better. Pitching on middle, spinning past off stump. Kohli, watching with interest from the non-strikers end, wanders down to have a chat with Nair.
