Karun Nair made his debut in the last Test in Mohali. He scored 4, from 4 balls, lasting 4 minutes at the crease. There's a pleasing symmetry about that. The crowd, you suspect, are more interested in Kohli, who is nearing another half-century. England must be sick of the sight of him. He keeps the strike with a sneaky single off Moeen, turning his wrists nicely through mid-wicket.

Murali Vijay's eight Test centuries have all been between 126 and 167.

Ah. Rashid follows up that wicket with a googly that is short, and Karun Nair hammers it away to the boundary. Rashid looks furious with himself, and rightly so.

It is a really good catch. Not a good ball but he has hit out the middle of the bat and after juggling it, Rashid takes it second time. He has to go. This is a very quiet stadium when a wicket falls.

    Vijay c&b Rashid 136 (Eng 262-3)

Gone! Rashid's got Vijay! What a gift that is, a low full toss that Vijay could have smashed anywhere and instead he's popped it back to Rashid. It's a good catch, Rashid getting down low, but Vijay can hardly believe what he's done. He trudges off after a hearty back pat from Ben Stokes, before raising his bat to the crowd.

Kohli is just waiting for that second new ball. He's nearly got 50 without trying too hard. As long as the scorecard is ticking there's no need to change gear.

    Kohli 47, Vijay 134

Shot! Ooft, that's emphatic from Vijay. He darts down the pitch to Moeen and absolutely leathers him through mid-off for four. They seem to be finding it so easy to face Moeen. Vijay sweeps, and the ball momentarily bobbles into the air, but it drops some way short of the fielder.

You just sense on a wicket like this that there could be a low score.

  9. Ind 253-2published at 86 overs

Kohli's missed one! That might be the first time today's that happened. Good from Rashid, with Kohli trying to prod the ball into the off-side. It spun sharply and Bairstow took it some way outside off stump. The big crowd, who have been cheering everything Kohli does, takes a collective breath.

The question is 'when is Kohli going to cut loose?' He makes it look so easy; he's going through the gears.

  11. Ind 251-2published at 85 overs

The second spin twin, Moeen, will take the second over. Vijay greets him with a glorious whip that picks up a couple. I thought he was a little reckless to the spin yesterday - there was one shot down the ground where he was lucky not to be caught - but he's been in fine touch today. Both these two are content, for the time being, to milk a couple of singles.

Rashid will get going again after lunch, with Stokes hovering at slip. Kohli leaves like a man who has his eye in. There's some turn for Rashid, causing a big puff of dirt to rise up from the pitch, but the ball is moving away from the batsman. A maiden.

Right, here we go. England need to find some oomph from somewhere, otherwise it'll be a long ol' afternoon in the field.

Most of the big crowd have come to watch Kohli, there's no doubt at all. There's no doubt which of these players is a good player and which one is a class act. He glides into position so quickly. When it's slow like this with modest bowling, it's money for old rope for him.

Cheers, Dawkesy. Kohli is very, very good, isn't he? England just look a bit lacklustre. The second he smacked that first ball for four, the shoulders went down.

Kohli is the first India batsman to score 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year since Rahul Dravid in 2011. Dravid managed it three times in his career, Sunil Gavaskar four and Sachin Tendulkar six.
