    Ashwin c Jennings b Root 0 (Eng 307-6)

Joe Root, I will never gently mock your bowling again. Cook's back on the field but Root continues. Ashwin goes to hammer his first ball away but it pops up to short leg. Jennings snaffles the rebound off his stomach, and Ashwin's gone for a three-ball duck.

  2. Umpire reviewpublished at 104.1 overs

Joe Root might have another! Keaton Jennings has taken a blinder at short leg to dismiss Ashwin. Ashwin isn't going anywhere, the umpire soft signal out, and then go upstairs.

Kenny Paterson: Superb from Joe 'my ball' Root.

Ian Davies: Cook off the field...Root uses imagination..says something...

Arjun Sohanpal: Rooooooooot! Haha old Goldenarm at it again. That was brilliant.

  4. Ind 307-5published at 104 overs

Kohli is continuing completely unruffled at the other end. He's so quick with his hands, constantly working the spinners this way and that. He tries to work Rashid past Buttler and then has a swish at the air in annoyance as he can't get the angle right.

That is good for England. Good captaincy. People might say Joe Root is a pie chucker but it is doing something different for a couple of overs. He tossed it up and Patel got inside it trying to hit it through the covers. England are still in it.

Root finishes off a tidy over and jogs off with a bit of a grin on his face. He's now taken 14 Test wickets.

Patel is used to playing here and he likes the ball coming on. It is not so easy when you first come in and it is turning. He is not comfortable at all. I don't think he read Rashid's wrong 'un.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 102.4 overs

    Parthiv c Bairstow b Root 15 (Eng 305-5)

Cook is off the field so Root brings himself on to bowl, and he's got a wicket! Parthiv, who might be regretting those comments he made about England's spinners yesterday, chased a well-flighted delivery from Root. It bounced more than he expected and Bairstow snaffled up the outside edge.

India have now made at least 300 in the first innings in each of their past 11 Tests. Three of those totals were in excess of 400 and three were 500-plus.

Ben Stanfield: India are just run machines. Especially at home. Wonder when they last scored less than 250 in a first innings?

If we all dressed like Blowers, the world would be a happier place. Rashid will continue. These two have bowled unchanged since the session began just over an hour ago. Parthiv plays a delicious shovel drive that picks up a couple. He's not been shy about using his feet to the spinners.

Utterly magnificent. I won't hear a word against Blowers. In fact, I'd happily buy from any fashion line he wants to start.

  13. Ind 300-4published at 101 overs

Some short rubbish from Moeen gets the treatment it deserves as Parthiv absolutely hammers it away to the boundary. Cook at gully exhales, hands on hips, while Moeen bites down on his finger. The rest of the over is better, Moeen bowling a slightly fuller length and there's nothing there for Parthiv to carve to the boundary. A single brings up India's 300, so they trail England by just 100 now.

Kohli went 84 balls without a boundary before that four off Rashid.

Rashid to resume, and that's lovely from Kohli. Rocked on to the back foot, a hearty cut through mid-wicket, and that will be four. Has drinks brought about a change of attack? Parthiv has come charging down again to Rashid but he's misread the ball completely. He tried to turn it off his front pad and he ended up looking one way while the ball rolled in the opposite direction.

  17. drinks break

    Drinks - Ind 287-4published at 99 overs

    Parthiv 4, Kohli 55

There's a sensational amount of noise whenever Kohli plays any sort of shot. A whip through mid-wicket brings about cheers and beating of the drums, despite the fact it's only gone for a single. Parthiv, who doesn't get quite the same sort of adulation from the crowd, blocks the last ball of the over. Time for drinks.

This is a key phase of the game, with Patel, an instinctive, attacking batsman, and Kohli, who is batting beautifully.

  19. Ind 286-4published at 98 overs

Big appeal from Cook at slip, claiming he's caught Parthiv, but umpire Erasmus is unimpressed. Rightly so, too, as Parthiv's missed that by some way. It turned some way into him, snuck past the bat and ballooned up off his pad. Parthiv then charges down the wicket to Rashid, looking to go over the top, but Rashid stops it with a glare.
