    Eng 99-3

Kohli can bat. We know this much. But he isn't so hot in the field. Bairstow's attempted reverse sweep to Ashwin takes a nick and offers a catch to the India captain at slip but he dives and spills it.

A single from the last ball brings up the 50 partnership. From 70 balls.

People calling for Bayliss to go - ridiculous. No one hardly wins away anymore in Test cricket, and I am sure he didn't agree a quite frankly bizarre schedule this winter. This tour, despite a probably 4-0 loss, could be the beginning of something special now we've unearthed two fantastic batting talents in Jennings and Hameed. Chin up everyone! Trevor knows what he is doing!

More runs through luck as Bairstow bottom edges a cut for four off Jadeja. They've still got miles of woods in every direction before they can even think about getting out but this is better from England.

Joe Root looks a class apart. He's not going down without a fight. He reverse sweeps himself to 50 and then adds a second four by dancing down to drive.

    Bairstow 8, Root 47

Every ball is drawing a huge puff of dust off the surface, like it's Batman dropping a pellet to escape an impossible situation.

Root's solution is to go on the attack with a slap-sweep that brings him four.

You should have a go at batting left-handed - try something different.

My word it is turning. Ashwin gets one to cut back from about two foot outside off to dart back in to the body of the batsman.

The umpire checks on a stumping to Root, but his foot never left his ground. Not out. England are clinging on.

Jadeja is beating the bat with alarming regularity. He turns Root inside out with another ball that turns miles before drawing him forward with another air shot far away from his body. I'm not surprised the spinner is smiling. He is fishing with dynamite here.

Better from Bairstow as he gets in a stride to play Ashwin on the front foot. Root dances down but quickly has to retreat to keep the ball out, it eventually coming off his thigh.

Bairstow is beaten twice outside off by Jadeja to more oohs. He then drops a drive just short of cover. The wicketkeeper-batsman is prodding a lion with a stick.

    Bairstow 2, Root 40

Bairstow is not long for this game. He again tries to play that completely misjudged cut shot and is lucky not to bowled by a big turning ball from Ashwin. He pops a subsequent ball up to short leg but only off his pads. Oohs and aahs and whoops and hollas to every ball from the Indian fielders.

Root, in contrast, finds another boundary courtesy of a lap slog.

I didn't expect England to win the series here, but I expected them to compete. They have got so much talent but they're so mentally fragile at times.

England are regressing. Players that can't get big scores. Can't bowl consistently. A captain that is very out of ideas. And a coach who isn't improving the Test team at all.

England are gifted four more byes as Root misses his sweep to Jadeja and the ball skips away to the rope at fine leg. Root then connects with a sweep to add four to his and his country's total. The number three is the only man who looks capable of standing firm against this onslaught.

He's trying to cut an off-spinner on a pitch that is turning miles. That almost took the leg bail.

  20. Eng 54-3published at 15 overs

Bairstow is living dangerously. He goes back to Ashwin and doesn't get enough bat on the ball, causing it to drop down and roll between his legs and just past leg stump. It may even have clipped the stump. He then rocks back to try and cut and misses, with the ball an inch from taking the bail before running away for four byes.
