    Mishra 0-39 from 10

Several of the large, isolated yellow-seated stands that tower over the ground are empty but they have not been declared safe for spectators following Monday's Cyclone Vardah. Moeen moves into the 90s as the batsmen milk Mishra for three singles.

    Moeen 89, Bairstow 46

The ever purposeful Bairstow races through for another single off Jadeja, Rahul, whose whites have turned almost completely pink through shining the ball, unable to get his throw into the keeper before Moeen is safely home.

He's got a bit of character, that Moeen Ali. You can't dislike him. Compare his bowling and batting to some of the greats of English cricket, and he'd be way down. But he's got a lot of character, that's what sport should be about.

  6. Eng 243-3published at 76 overs

    Moeen 89, Bairstow 45

Moeen deftly sweeps for two, leaving Mishra ruefully running his fingers through his thinning hair, as I might well do when I get the results of my roof survey later. Time for drinks. Mine might be of a stiff nature when that roof inspection arrives.

Tom Potter: Shouldn't worry about an England collapse today. Pakistan have already claimed today's crown.

  8. Eng 239-3published at 75 overs

    Moeen 86, Bairstow 44

Opening batsman Karun Rahul comes in for his first spell in Test cricket, a sign of England's performance today. It's not quite turning to Mike Atherton but it is certainly Joe Root-esque. It is a nice rhythmical off-spinner's action but does not provide much threat. Just the sort of bowling that could get a wicket if concentration wavers.

England would have to do something incredibly poor, play some poor shots to get out on this. But don't forget, we were 230-2 in Mumbai and gave it away.

  10. Eng 235-3published at 74 overs

    Moeen 84, Bairstow 42

Jonny misses out on a full toss from Mishra, but both batsmen collect singles to keep the scoreboard operator busy.

  11. Not outpublished at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2016

Umpire's call for clipping leg stump is the answer and India will have seven overs without a review.

  12. Umpire reviewpublished at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2016

India are going to gamble with their final review as Mishra pins Moeen on the front pad, but not out is the original call.

  13. Bird preys on Pakistanpublished at 09:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2016

It's not looking good for Pakistan in the day-night Test in Brisbane. After bowling Australia out for 429 earlier today, Pakistan have slumped to 56-6 - two wickets each for pace trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Jackson Bird, the latter having figures of 6-4-5-2.

  14. Eng 233-3published at 73 overs

    Jadeja 2-69 from 24

Jonny collects two more off Jadeja and is only 21 runs short of Michael Vaughan's record of runs per calendar year now.

Really like the way Moeen sticks to his task. Numerous times this year I've had texts written and ready to send which question his place in the side, then he takes wickets or scores runs and it suddenly feels right to just let him build his confidence and cement his place in the team. Still think he's better batting a bit further down, mind.

    Moeen 82, Bairstow 39

Moeen pushes down the ground for a single and bowler Ashwin causes non-striker Bairstow to drop his bat as he brushes into him, in the way they say WG used to do to the bowlers when he was the non-striker. Ashwin politely collects the blade though and plays a few imaginary shots with it.

Bairstow gets into a tangle as he advances to Jadeja, it goes through him but wicketkeeper Patel cannot gather high to his left and the stumping chance goes. An England supporter enjoys a succulent looking slice of afternoon pizza. I brought a huge chicken and pepper thin and crusty with me for my seven-day stretch at work, it was fabulous when first cooked by my beloved but I am already tiring of it with four days still to serve.

Moeen has played very well. Sometimes he's scratchy starter against the spinners. He plays a part. When you look at him you think he's not the greatest batsman or off-spinner, but he's a good cricketer.

  20. Eng 221-3published at 70 overs

    Ashwin 0-65 from 20

Moeen, stylish and calm, in complete contrast to this morning, strokes Ashwin for three through the covers and the serene progress continues. Will there be a collapse today? We have to ask...
