He's got a bit of character, that Moeen Ali. You can't dislike him. Compare his bowling and batting to some of the greats of English cricket, and he'd be way down. But he's got a lot of character, that's what sport should be about.

Moeen deftly sweeps for two, leaving Mishra ruefully running his fingers through his thinning hair, as I might well do when I get the results of my roof survey later. Time for drinks. Mine might be of a stiff nature when that roof inspection arrives.

Moeen pushes down the ground for a single and bowler Ashwin causes non-striker Bairstow to drop his bat as he brushes into him, in the way they say WG used to do to the bowlers when he was the non-striker. Ashwin politely collects the blade though and plays a few imaginary shots with it.

Bairstow gets into a tangle as he advances to Jadeja, it goes through him but wicketkeeper Patel cannot gather high to his left and the stumping chance goes. An England supporter enjoys a succulent looking slice of afternoon pizza. I brought a huge chicken and pepper thin and crusty with me for my seven-day stretch at work, it was fabulous when first cooked by my beloved but I am already tiring of it with four days still to serve.

Moeen has played very well. Sometimes he's scratchy starter against the spinners. He plays a part. When you look at him you think he's not the greatest batsman or off-spinner, but he's a good cricketer.

Moeen, stylish and calm, in complete contrast to this morning, strokes Ashwin for three through the covers and the serene progress continues. Will there be a collapse today? We have to ask...
