Around the 15 or 20 mark, the fluency started to come for Moeen. For most batsmen, especially on Indian pitches, they talk about the first 20 balls. After that, the good batsmen start to pick up the length.

  2. new ball

    Eng 274-4 (Moeen 110, Stokes 5)

Ishant returns with two deliveries using the old ball, which looks as though the dog has been at it, but his first two balls with the new cherry are sumptuously stroked through the covers to the boundary by Moeen.

Rob Zabrocky: Watching Moeen Ali bat like this is like watching an artist. Beautiful strokes, beautiful balance.

Geoff Shaw: Well done Moeen Ali - great century.

Altaf Shaikh: Great birthday gift, thanks Moeen Ali.

    Bowser: MOOOOEEEENNNN! What a man.

It's very similar statistically to Mumbai, but can they get to the close with just four down? I think they were five down at the close after day one there.

  5. Eng 265-4published at 85 overs

    Moeen 101, Stokes 5

Moeen has a wild sweep and a miss at a wide one from Ashwin turning even further away. Will the local favourite end the day wicketless? It seemed highly improbable earlier, as did a Moeen century. But that's the beauty of the five-day game.

JTreg:  Will never understand those that question the inclusion of Mo. He's not the world's greatest bowler but he's a great batsman.

It's the first hundred by an England number four since Joe Root at Johannesburg back in January. And it's Moeen's fourth century of the year.

  8. 100 runs

100 for Moeenpublished at 84 overs

    Eng 263-4

A magnificent fifth Test century for Moeen, who was dropped on nought remember. It is his second hundred of the series and it came from 203 balls with a single off Mishra, after he moved to 99 with a stylish ninth boundary

    Peter Eastwood: The collapse beginneth.

Ewan Mehenim: Not that it matters at 3-0 down in the last Test of a poor series but yet another stupid waste of a wicket! Ugh! Bairstow!

Adam Taylor: England always always lose late wickets. It seems we run out of gas mentally. Terrible habit.

  10. Eng 256-4published at 83 overs

    Moeen 95, Stokes 2

Moeen's 200th delivery of the innings but he calmly defends Ashwin into the off side and will be off strike again with seven overs of play remaining.

VB: Woke up stupidly early after the late shift, thought I'd have some @bbctms, external with my coffee, Bairstow gone. Sorry everyone.

  12. Eng 255-4published at 82 overs

Ben Stokes is the new man and he gets off the mark with a single off Mishra. Moeen still five short of his century and he will be off strike as Ashwin returns.

I was hoping Jonny Bairstow was going to reach his 50 without hitting a four. He faced 90 balls and hit three sixes, but no fours.

It was the anxiety to get to 50 that made him play that shot, the ball wasn't really there for him to drive. When you're approaching a landmark, you're so nervous that you play shots you normally wouldn't - and Jonny Bairstow has paid the price.

It might also delay the taking of the second new ball.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 81 overs

    Bairstow c Rahul b Jadeja 49 (Eng 253-4)

Oh Jonny, why? It was there for the drive and Jonny drove, but, one short of his 15th Test fifty, it was straight to cover and Rahul took a neat catch at knee height. Another impressive knock from Bairstow but an unfortunate way to go and he tosses his gloves away as he returns in angry fashion to the pavilion.

  16. new ball

    Sunil Gavaskar
Former India captain on BBC Test Match Special

The second new ball is available now, there's about 40 minutes of play left, so I'd think India would take it in about 10 minutes so they get half-an-hour with it tonight, and a second bite at the cherry tomorrow.

  17. Eng 252-3published at 80 overs

    Moeen 94, Bairstow 49

Moeen turns Mishra off his pads for a single to keep the bowling and is within a big hit of a hundred. New ball available for India, plus two more reviews.

  19. Eng 247-3published at 79 overs

    Moeen 90, Bairstow 48

Jadeja gets through an over quicker than Angus Fraser used to take to return to his mark, but at least it is good for a prompt finish as scheduled at 11:00 GMT. Only the third maiden for the left-arm spinner.

AS Malik: Come on Moeen Ali please get that hundred! England always gives me a sore head especially when we collapse, lets get to 600!

Ladida: Moeen is such an underrated cricketer. He deserves more credit than he gets. So often contributes to this side.
