In 2003, as a young trainee teacher, I asked for and was granted permission to miss the school summer fair as I had tickets to watch the Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge. I told the head I was attending my cousin's wedding as missing the fair needed a serious excuse. I was later pictured on the big screen dancing with beer in hand after Freddie took a wicket late in the day. Monday was awkward.

Ah, this old trick. The tried and tested 'the ball isn't doing anything so we'll try to get it changed' ploy. Virat Kohli has a word with the umpires, but they aren't playing. He'd be hard pressed to convince them that Dawson and Rashid have battered it out of shape. Come on Virat, it's only England's eighth-wicket pair.

I missed my mum's wedding and my nephew's christening on the same weekend to watch day four and five of the 2009 Ashes Test in Cardiff. Fair to say I haven't regretted that decision.

Jadeja's spikes are more pinky-orange than white. He twinkles in to Dawson, who impressively still manages to fidget even when he is running a couple. Try it for yourself. Pulling your trousers up while padded up and wearing batting gloves is hard to do standing still, let alone when you're scampering back for a second.

Michael Blakey: Dawson should realise he has just as much chance getting into this team as a batter. Remember how Steve Smith's career started?

Ooofff. Rare false stroke, Rashid trying to cut Mishra and almost feathering behind. False stroke? Forget that, Rashid pouncing on a flighted tempter to play a wonderful drive through the covers for four. Mishra, all sweat and thin hair, looks livid with attempt at a stop by Karun Nair. He fielded like a man who has just had a manicure.

Liam B: England need at least 500, even then I wouldn't be confident of the draw until I see it. 4-0 beckoning.

India are whipping through these overs, keeping a lid on the scoring, not that it's bothering this patient England pair. Indeed, if the tourists can keep temptation at bay, this situation is ideal for them. Softly, softly, catchy monkey.

Missing things in the name of cricket: my eight-day-old daughter, Martha, has decided that she's not going to waste time sleeping when TMS is on. She was so excited she woke up at 3am...

When Mishra is bowling, none of the main protagonists are pushing the height chart. Mishra, Rashid, Dawson and keeper Parthiv Patel would all have to check if they are allowed to ride a rollercoaster. Then again, we're not in James Taylor territory. Solid defence on the back foot from Dawson, stright bat. Anyone would think he's a bat who bowls...

Dawson now only has one slip for company, with a man on the drive for the sunglasses-wearing Jadeja. He's sporting some decent protection - an armguard and a chest pad under his shirt. There's a decent crowd inside the ground, most of them sensibly sitting in the shade. Serene stuff for England after lunch.

Oh, hello! Adil Rashid with one of the shots of the match so far. Full ball from Mishra, Rashid whipping between mid-wicket and mid-on with the elastic wrists of Stretch Armstrong. I suspect this pair of England spinners have sussed that the more runs the get, the more slack they will have with the ball.

They have added 64, which is no mean partnership. The less good news if you're English is it's all looking rather easy, the pitch is sleeping so England will have to bowl quite a few overs to get any wickets I suspect.

Has Liam Dawson already impressed enough to wind Virat Kohli up? I'm seeing a replay of a Kohli throw that almost wiped out Dawson. The Hampshire man might be a rookie, but I'd back him in a scrap against the show pony Kohli. The progress of this pair is making some of England's dismissals look a little woeful. I'm looking at you Keaton Jennings, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow...

Umpire Erasmus just stepped in to have a quiet word with Kohli. Erasmus has a very benign manner and reminds me of dear old David Shepherd, partly in stature, but also in demeanour. The players like him.

How's your luck, Adil Rashid? He gets himself into an ugly position when trying to whip Amit Mishra into the leg side, but a loopy, teasing leading edge falls short of mid-off after an age in the air. Rashid adds insult to his good fortune with a cut for four, then survives when Mishra asks for leg before.

With this England side and squad used in India, I can't help but think of the old Eric Morecambe quote: we have the right players, but not necessarily in the right order.

You raise a decent point, Phil. If England's eighth-wicket pair are looking this comfortable, how many might Kohli and Pujara get? Dawson, forever gurning and fidgeting, opens the face to get Jadeja to third man for four. He has the look of a man who thinks he belongs at this level. Quite unfazed.
